O.J. Murdock, who signed with the NFL's Tennessee Titans last year, killed himself Monday morning in front of the Tampa, Florida, high school where he was a track and football star, police said.Murdock, 25, never played a game in the NFL because he had been sidelined with an injury since signing as an undrafted player a year ago."In his brief time here, a number of our players, coaches and staff had grown close to O.J., and this is a difficult time for them," the Titans said in a statement. "He spent the last year battling back from an Achilles injury as he prepared for this year's training camp."Titans head coach Mike Munchak, in his daily briefing with reporters Saturday, was asked why Murdock, a wide receiver, had not yet reported to training camp."He had some personal things come up," Munchak said. "He called us, and we're hoping to see him tonight."Murdock was placed on the "did not report" list over the weekend, but he was still on the roster, team spokesman Robbie Bohren told CNN on Monday."Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as they try to cope with this tragedy," the team statement said.A Tampa police officer found Murdock "in his car in front of Middleton High School with an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound," at 8:30 a.m. Monday, a police statement said.He died two hours later at Tampa General Hospital, police said.Murdock was ranked among the top football players in Florida and the nation in 2005 when he was a senior at Middleton High School, according to his biography on the Titans website. He was also a star sprinter on his school's track team. His college career started at the University of South Carolina, but he transferred to Fort Hays State after playing in just four games as a freshman and being redshirted. He then moved to Pearl River Community College, where he was a criminal justice major.CNN's Jillian Martin contributed to this report.

There?s a Silver Lining for Sands China in Macau

A positive outlook for the mass segment in the world?s largest gaming market, Macau, could be the silver lining for the shares of Hong-Kong listed Sands China, which hit a seven-month low late last week after its parent company, Las Vegas Sands, reported second-quarter earnings that were? worse than expected, analysts told CNBC.

Sandscotaicentral.com

Sands Cotai Central

?This is a segment (mass-market) that continues to grow and is profitable, so that?s why we love shares in both Las Vegas Sands [LVS? Loading...? ? ? () ? ] and Sands China [1928.HK? Loading...? ? ? () ? ] at these levels,? said Grant Govertsen, Partner & Analyst at Union Gaming Research.

Shares of gaming operators in Macau have taken a hit from the weaker outlook for revenue growth as China?s economy slows. Sands China shares are down about 30 percent from a peak hit in mid-April, while Hong-Kong listed rivals, Wynn Macau, a unit of U.S. gaming company Wynn Resorts, and SJM Holdings, founded by Hong Kong billionaire Stanley Ho, have fallen around 38 percent and 24 percent, respectively in the last three months.

Las Vegas Sands reported last week that net income at its Macau unit, Sands China, fell 40 percent year-on-year to $160.5 million in the second quarter because of higher-than-expected opening expenses at Cotai Central, the new Sands? Macau casino that opened in April, and on a $1.01 billion impairment charge on two land parcels.

?We?re not worried about the Las Vegas Sands results. If you look at Macau there?s no other casino that can touch them in terms of what they have to offer the mass market,? said Govertsen.

He adds that Sands China is better positioned than its competitors like SJM to tap the middle class visitors especially from China given the expected growth in the number of hotel rooms, slot machines and table games that it operates directly.

Sands China shares gained some lost ground on Monday, climbing almost 6 percent to HK$23.15 ($2.98). CLSA?s Analyst Richard Huang says Sands China is his top pick among Macau gaming stocks. He said CLSA has a buy recommendation on the stock with a target price of HK$33.3.

?Mass market gaming revenue growth has remained robust. The mass gaming segment is also the high-profit margin segment with an Ebitda margin at around 40 percent (versus a VIP gaming Ebitda margin of around 10 percent). And Sands China is the company with the highest exposure to the mass market,? Huang said.

According to Fitch Ratings, The VIP segment makes up slightly more than 70 percent of the overall market in Macau and over the last several years has grown faster than the mass market.

?However, we expect that to change over the next several years, with faster growth occurring in the mass market. The mass market will likely make up an increasingly larger portion of the market, as the next wave of supply growth starts to come on line in 2015-2016,? Fitch said in a report published last week.

Fitch Ratings last week revised down its 2012 Macau revenue growth forecast to 10-12 percent from 15 percent earlier to reflect a more cautious view in terms of the impact a slowdown in China will have in the near-term.

Macau gaming revenues grew 42 percent in 2011 and 58 percent in 2010, according to Fitch.

Armstrong cuts 2012 outlook as economy worsens

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) ? Armstrong World Industries Inc.'s second-quarter net income rose 10 percent on cost cuts, but the company cut its outlook for the year, citing weakening growth in the U.S. and the worsening economy in Europe.

The company, which makes floors and ceilings, said it expects less opportunity for residential and commercial remodelings.

Armstrong is aiming to cut costs as revenue declines and boosted long-term plan to cut costs by $15 million to $200 million. For this year, it now expects to save $50 million rather than $35 million.

A slowing economy may hurt demand in the construction and real estate industries. Armstrong's annual revenue has not recovered from its 2007 level, before the worst of the Great Recession hit.

In the three months ended June 30, Armstrong earned $41.8 million, or 70 cents per share, from $37.9 million, or 64 cents per share, a year ago. The Lancaster, Pa., company credited lower manufacturing costs, selling and general expenses and higher prices for helping profit despite volume declines in all its businesses and regions.

The stronger dollar also hurt results. A rising dollar cuts into income earned in foreign currencies when it's translated back into the dollar.

Profit adjusted for one-time items was 71 cents per share. Revenue dropped 5 percent to $709.9 million from $748.6 million on the stronger dollar and volume declines.

That fell far short of Wall Street expectations. Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of 78 cents per share on $765.4 million in revenue.

In the current quarter, Armstrong anticipates revenue of $740 million to $780 million, below Wall Street's expectation of $803.3 million.

The company also cut its outlook for the full year to below analyst predictions.

Armstrong predicts earnings of $2.40 to $2.70 per share, excluding one-time items, in 2012, down from its previous estimate of $2.65 to $3.05 per share. Analysts expect profit of $2.72 per share.

The company also cut its 2012 revenue guidance to $2.75 to $2.85 billion from a prediction earlier this year of $2.9 billion to $3 billion. Analysts expect $2.92 billion.

Though it's not exactly an earth-shattering revelation, Microsoft has confirmed that Surface tablets will arrive October 26 along with Windows 8.

"The next version of our operating system, Windows 8, will be generally available on October 26, 2012. At that time, we will begin selling the Surface, a series of Microsoft-designed and manufactured hardware devices," Microsoft said in its annual report filed this week with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Microsoft has said before that Surface products "would be available the same time that Windows 8" was launched, but it's reassuring to see the date in writing.

And, remember, those are Windows RT tablets only. The Intel-based Surface Pro is expected about 90 days later, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft has also peppered disclaimers throughout the annual report (these appear often in SEC filings) about the success, or lack thereof, of Windows 8.

In fall 2012, we are launching Windows 8...Its success depends on a number of factors including the extent to which customers embrace its new user interface and functionality, successfully coordinating with our OEM partners in releasing a variety of hardware devices that take advantage of its features, and attracting developers at scale to ensure a competitive array of quality applications. We expect to incur substantial marketing costs in launching Window 8 and associated services and devices, which may reduce our operating margins."

That last part about "may reduce operating margins" is something Wall Street will of course be watching closely. In short, if Windows 8 is not relatively successful, this may fuel doubts about Microsoft's viability in the age of the iPad and Android.

The Surface products will be offered in basically two forms. One is expected to be a more price-friendly version running Windows RT on top of ARM chips. The other, likely a bit pricier, will run Windows 8 Pro on top of Intel "Ivy Bridge" processors.

And pricing? While there's a lot of whacky speculation about sky-high pricing, Microsoft's own guidance portends a more rational pricing scheme.

"Suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to availability and is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-class PC," Microsoft said in a statement.

Based on that statement, a back-of-the-envelope estimate could put -- the operative word here is "could" as this is simply speculation -- Windows RT products as low as $500-$600 and Windows 8 Pro Intel-based products ranging up to $1,000, or possibly higher.

That said, Microsoft's pricing plans are undoubtedly in a state of flux, and we won't know until the company tells us.

Yosemite Historian

If you could look back and wonder if you were the first people to have seen Yosemite Valley, what would you have thought? That is what it may have seemed for John Muir. He was not the first person to have seen the valley the first people in the valley. The first known people in the valley were the Ahwaneechee Indian or some call them Yosemite Indians. Their Chief was Chief Teneiya and there was eight villages including one at the base of Yosemite Falls called Ah-wah´-nee. The first know white man that came to the valley was in 1851. These men were looking for Indians and they had the intention of driving the Indians away from their land.

The valley was named by a young doctor, who gave the valley the name Yosemite. This is where I was confused many of the books and website I have read said that the Indians was Yosemite Indians but a website I just saw said that the doctor called the land Yosemite thinking that is what the Indians were named. This website said that the young doctor made a mistake. In a way I do not know if could trust that website as true history, but one can change history and made it the way he or she would have liked to see it. I am sure this website is true in most cases but many times a history story or a past story can also be made to more than it was at the time. Meaning making it a bigger deal then it was at the time. Now I am going to research the young doctor and see if this website got that right. Well according to this website the young man was named Lafayette Bunnell. I was interested in learning more about man. I searched his name on yahoo and found that it is true that he was one of the ones who first saw the Yosemite Valley. He was a doctor and was on Mariposa Battalion which purpose was to find Native American tribal leaders that lead raid on American settlements. I would like to read a book that has this man?s story of the discovery of Yosemite.

This book is called ?Discovery of the Yosemite, and the Indian war of 1851?. I will try to find a copy of this book and read it. I wanted to know more so I searched again. Bunnell encountered Chief Tenaya. Burnnell was the first non-Indian to see Chef Tenaya or at least that is what the website I saw said.

Britain, USA pounce as China, Japan wobble

The United States and hosts Great Britain exploited error-strewn displays from Japan and defending Olympic champions China to set the pace in men's artistic gymnastics qualifying on Saturday.

Two Chinese men slipped off the pommel horse and one of them fell on his face in the floor routine, while Japanese superstar Kohei Uchimura fell twice as Japan finished the second qualifying session in third place overall.

The USA were the chief beneficiaries, finishing with a total score of 275.342 that put them above Britain (272.420), with China (269.285) down in fourth.

Britain are now set to feature in their first final since 1924, ahead of the day's final qualifying session later on Saturday.

China were particularly disappointing on the pommel horse, with Guo Weiyang and Zhang Chenglong both falling, while Zou Kai also failed to convince.

Guo, a late replacement for the injured Teng Haibin, also produced a poor floor display, with a clumsy face-first fall in his final tumble contributing to a dismal score of 12.266.

"One of the gymnasts is a substitute, and he made quite a few mistakes due to a lack of experience," said Chen Yibing of team-mate Guo's display.

"We think that we should beat Britain, but because of the substitute and various other things, we didn't perform as we should have."

Three-time world champion Uchimura has been tipped to sweep all before him in London, but he came off the high bar and earned a score of just 12.466 on the pommel horse following a fall and an incomplete dismount.

He was nonetheless awarded a mark of 15.766 on the floor, a 16.033 on the vault, and a 15.533 on the parallel bars to finish the second session in fourth place in the individual all-around standings.

His Japan team-mates endured similarly mixed afternoons, with Kazuhito Tanaka also falling twice and almost sliding off the mat during his floor exercise.

"There were a couple of mistakes that happened at different stages, notably on the high bar, and that created a bit of uncertainty," said Uchimura.

On his own errors, he said: "I'll try not to make any more mistakes. We'll practice tomorrow (Sunday), so I'll try to improve."

Britain were solid throughout, and saw Kristian Thomas and Daniel Purvis make the early running in the individual standings.

Olympic bronze medallist Louis Smith delivered an impressive 15.800 routine on the pommel horse, prompting huge cheers from the home crowd that brought tears to the British star's eyes.

"I knew that if I got through my routine I'd break down, because it's been such an emotional four years," he said.

On the reaction of the supporters, he said: "It was magical, it really was. When they announced us and the crowd erupted, it blew your socks off."

American fans replaced their British counterparts in the afternoon session and they, too, had plenty to cheer about.

Jonathan Horton made up for falls on the pommel horse and the parallel bars with a fine 15.566 routine on the high bar, while Danell Leyva and John Orozco claimed first and second place in the individual all-around standings.

"I didn't see China's score, but I was aware that Japan was having a rough day," said US team captain Horton.

"I watch routines all the time and I see Kohei struggling and some other guys struggling, but I wasn't really focusing on that at all.

"We did a good job and managed to stay within our own little team container."

Can we feed 9 billion people by 2050 or will we starve?

The question of food security in the world, on account of galloping population growth, seemed to be one of the most pressing concerns at the recently concluded ESOF 2012 (Euroscience Open Forum) in Dublin.

By 2050 the global population is expected to reach 9 billion with the majority of this increase in our part of the developing world ? in Asia. In order to feed this massive number of mouths, speakers at the forum indicated that a huge rise in food production of about 50% was required. The question in everyone?s mind was, if we cant feed the starving 1 billion today how can we ramp up for the increased numbers in 2050?

Speaking to Prof Jonathan Jones FRS of Sainsbury Lab, Norwich UK, one of the foremost experts involved in the study of meeting the challenge of tackling global hunger, he said that researchers have identified many simple methods of matching the demand for food as it must match the supply, and soon the world will face the ?perfect storm? of food insecurity if we do not tackle the situation sensibly.

?Improved agronomy could make a big contribution. Increasing population and consumption are placing unprecedented demands on agriculture and natural resources. Today, approximately a billion people are chronically malnourished while our agricultural systems are concurrently degrading land, water, biodiversity and climate on a global scale. To meet the world?s future food security and sustainability needs, food production must grow substantially while, at the same time, agriculture?s environmental footprint must shrink dramatically.? He shared his study which analysed solutions to this dilemma, by showing that tremendous progress could be made by halting agricultural expansion, closing ?yield gaps? on underperforming lands, increasing cropping efficiency, shifting diets and most of all, reducing waste. ?Together, these strategies could double food production while greatly reducing the environmental impacts of agriculture,? explained Jones.

Contemporary agriculture faces enormous challenges today, reveals Jones. Even with recent productivity gains, roughly one in seven people lack access to food or are chronically malnourished, stemming from unabated poverty and mounting food prices. Unfortunately, the situation may worsen as food prices are the result of market speculation, bioenergy crop expansion and climatic disturbances. Even if we solve these food access challenges, much more crop production will probably be needed to guarantee future food security. Recent studies suggest that production would need to roughly double to keep pace with projected demands from population growth, dietary changes, especially with changes in meat consumption, and increasing bio-energy use, unless there are dramatic changes in agricultural consumption patterns.

Compounding this challenge, agriculture must also address tremendous environmental concerns. ?Agriculture is now a dominant force behind many environmental threats,? said Jones, ?including climate change, biodiversity loss and degradation of land and freshwater?. In fact, agriculture is a major force driving the environment beyond the ??planetary boundaries??. Looking forward, we face one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century: meeting society?s growing food needs while simultaneously reducing agriculture?s environmental harm of the planet.

Using new geospatial data and models, Jones has evaluated how new approaches to agriculture could benefit both food production and environmental sustainability. ?Our analysis focuses on the agronomic and environmental aspects of these challenges, and leaves a richer discussion of associated social, economic and cultural issues to future work,? he said.

Until recently, the scientific community could not measure, monitor and analyse the agriculture, food, environment system?s complex linkages at the global scale, says Jones.

?Today, however, we have new data that characterize worldwide patterns and trends in agriculture and the environment. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, croplands cover 1.53 billion hectares (about 12% of Earth?s ice-free land), while pastures cover another 3.38 billion hectares (about 26% of Earth?s ice-free land). Altogether, agriculture occupies about 38% of Earth?s terrestrial surface?the largest use of land on the planet. These areas comprise the land best suited for farming: much of the rest is covered by deserts, mountains, tundra, cities, ecological reserves and other lands unsuitable for agriculture.?

Studies show that between 1985 and 2005 the world?s fields and pastures expanded by 154 million hectares (about 3%). But this slow net increase includes significant expansion in the tropics, as well as little change or a decrease in the temperate zone. The result is a net redistribution of agricultural land towards the tropics, with implications for food production, food security and the environment.

Crop production across the world has increased substantially in recent decades. Looking at the figures of common crop groups, which include cereals, oilseeds, fruits and vegetables, it has been noticed that crop production has increased by 47% between 1985 and 2005. However, considering all 174 crops tracked by the UN FAO, researchers found that global crop production increased by only 28% during that time.

This 28% gain in production occurred as cropland area increased marginally by 2.4%, suggesting a 25%increase in yield. However, cropland area that was harvested increased by about 7% between 1985 and 2005?nearly three times the change in cropland area, owing to increased multiple cropping, fewer crop failures, and less land left fallow. Accounting for the increase in harvested land, average global crop yields increased by only 20% between 1985 and 2005, substantially less than the often-cited 47% production increase for selected crop groups, indicating that yields are not rising as quickly as before.

It was also found that measuring by aggregate did not reveal trends in individual crops or crop groups. For example, cereal crops decreased in harvested area by 3.6% between 1985 and 2005, yet their total production increased by 29%, reflecting a 34% increase in yields per hectare. Oil crops, on the other hand, showed large increases in both harvested area (43%) and yield (57%), resulting in a 125% increase in total production. While most crops increased production between 1985 and 2005, fodder crops did not: on average, they saw an 18% production drop as a 26% loss in harvested area overrode an 11% increase in yields.

Another important point noted was that the allocation of crops to non-food uses, including animal feed, seed, bio-energy and other industrial products, affects the amount of food available to the world. Globally, only 62% of crop is allocated to human food, versus 35% to animal feed, which produces human food indirectly, as meat and dairy products and 3% for bio-energy, seed and other industrial products.

It was also found that a striking disparity exists between regions that primarily grow crops for direct human consumption and those that produce crops for other uses. North America and Europe devote only about 40% of their croplands to direct food production, whereas Africa and Asia allocate typically over 80% of their cropland to food crops. Extremes range from the Upper Midwestern USA with less than 25% to South Asia with over 90%.

?So,? Jones said, ?as we face the twin challenges of feeding a growing world, while charting a more environmentally sustainable path, the amount of land and other resources, devoted to animal-based agriculture, merits critical evaluation?. For example, adding croplands devoted to animal feed (about 350 million hectares) to pasture and grazing lands (3.38 billion hectares), we find the land devoted to raising animals totals 3.73 billion hectareswhich is,75% of the world?s agricultural land.

The study also noted that, meat and dairy production can either add to or subtract from the world?s food supply. Grazing systems, especially on pastures unsuitable for other food production, and mixed crop?livestock systems can add calories and protein to the world and improve economic conditions and food security in many regions. However, using highly productive croplands to produce animal feed, no matter how efficiently, represents a net drain on the world?s potential food supply.

So according to Jones, the environmental impacts of agriculture included those caused by expansion, when croplands and pastures extend into new areas, replacing natural ecosystems and those caused by intensification, often through the use of irrigation, fertilizers, biocides and mechanization. Agricultural expansion has had tremendous impacts on habitats, biodiversity, carbon storage and soil conditions. In fact, worldwide agriculture had already cleared or converted 70% of the grassland, 50% of the savanna, 45% of the temperate deciduous forest, and 27% of the tropical forest biome.

?Today? said Jones, ?agriculture is mainly expanding in the tropics, where it is estimated that about 80% of new croplands are replacing forests?. This expansion is worrisome, given that tropical forests are rich reservoirs of biodiversity and key ecosystem services. Clearing tropical forests is also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and is estimated to release around 1.131015 grams of carbon per year, or about 12% of total anthropogenic CO2 emissions28. Slowing or halting expansion of agriculture in the tropics, will reduce carbon emissions as well as losses of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Agricultural intensification has dramatically increased in recent decades, outstripping rates of agricultural expansion, and has been responsible for most of the yield increases of the past few decades. In the past 50 years, the world?s irrigated cropland area roughly doubled, while global fertilizer use increased by 500%, with over 800% for nitrogen alone. Intensification has also caused water degradation, increased energy consumption, and widespread pollution.

Of particular concern is that some 70% of global freshwater are devoted to irrigation. Furthermore, rain-fed agriculture is the world?s largest user of water13,38. In addition, fertilizer use, manure application, and leguminous crops, which fix nitrogen in the soil, have dramatically disrupted global nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, with associated impacts on water quality, aquatic ecosystems and marine fisheries. Both agricultural expansion and intensification are also major contributors to climate change. Agriculture is responsible for 30?35% of global greenhouse gas emissions, largely from tropical deforestation, methane emissions from livestock and rice cultivation, and nitrous oxide emissions from fertilized soils.

Today, humans are farming more of the planet than ever, with higher resource intensity and staggering environmental impacts, while diverting an increasing fraction of crops to animals, bio-fuels and other non-food uses. Meanwhile, almost a billion people are chronically hungry. The requirements of current and future generations demand that we transform agriculture to meet the twin challenges of food security and environmental sustainability.

Prof. Jones neatly summed up his analysis which demonstrates that four core strategies can meet future food production needs and environmental challenges if deployed simultaneously. Adding them together, they increase global food availability by 100?180%, meeting projected demands while lowering greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity losses, water use and water pollution. However, all four strategies are needed to meet our global food production and environmental goals; no single strategy is sufficient.

Specific land use, agricultural and food system tactics must be developed and deployed. Fortunately, many such tactics already exist, including precision agriculture, drip irrigation, organic soil remedies, buffer strips and wetland restoration, new crop varieties that reduce needs for water and fertilizer, perennial grains and tree-cropping systems, and paying farmers for environmental services. However, deploying these tactics effectively around the world requires numerous economic and governance challenges to be overcome. For example, reforming global trade policies, including eliminating price-distorting subsidies and tariffs, will be vital to achieving the goals.

Finally to develop improved land use and agricultural practices, Jones suggested the following guidelines:

(1) Solutions should focus on critical biophysical and economic ?leverage points? in agricultural systems, where major improvements in food production or environmental performance may be achieved with the least effort and cost.

(2) New practices must also increase the resilience of the food system. High-efficiency, industrialized agriculture has many benefits, but it is vulnerable to disasters, including climatic disturbances, new diseases and economic calamities.

(3) Agricultural activities have many costs and benefits, but methods of evaluating the trade-offs are still poorly developed. We need better data and decision support tools to improve management decisions, productivity and environmental stewardship.

(4) The search for agricultural solutions should remain technology neutral.
There are multiple paths to improving the production, food security and environmental performance of agriculture, and we should not be locked into a single approach.

The challenges facing agriculture today said Jones are quite unlike anything we have experienced before, and they require revolutionary approaches to solving food production and sustainability problems.

In short, new agricultural systems must deliver more human value, to those who need it most, with the least environmental harm. That way we can ensure the 9 billion of us do not starve in 2050.

Leading Direct Marketing Direct Mail Agency Titan List & Mailing ...

Key members of Titan List and Mailing Services, Inc. compete in bodybuilding and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments.

?

Titan List & Mailing Services, Inc., a leading direct marketing ad agency in the mortgage market, recently made headlines outside of the office. Titan employees Bob Caruso and James Kaplan won awards in bodybuilding and Jiu Jitsu tournaments, respectively.

The staff, from Vice President K. Justin Restaino down to every member of the workforce boasts a diverse interest in various hobbies. ?I?ve always encouraged the staff to get involved with things outside of work,? said K. Justin Restaino. ?A happy staff is a productive staff.?

Most notably, Bob Caruso, Sales Manager at Titan List & Mailing Services, placed 2nd in the open light heavyweight division for the 2012 West Palm Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship.

?I?ve always loved working out,? said Caruso. ?It clears my head. And being able to compete at a high level in the gym translates directly into work. The way I train is the way I live. I?m systematic about my diet, my lifts, and I look at work the same way.?

Caruso is currently training for the Ruby Classic Bodybuilding and Fitness Competition taking place in October.

When one thinks about attributes that make a businessperson successful, stereotypes abound. Gordon Gecko, the cutthroat trader from Oliver Stone?s classic film, Wall Street, comes to mind. Almost automatically, there is an assumption that to flourish in business there must be an obsession with the bottom line, a compulsive fixation for detail, and a ruthless streak that supersedes reasonable business practice. While this is certainly still present in the business world, there are some companies that take an alternate approach. ?Rather than make employees profit seeking drones, Titan List associates are encouraged to not only invest themselves in the company, but also to invest in themselves. In this way, both the employer and the employee gain,? said Restaino.

James Kaplan, a sales associate at Titan Lists, avidly practices Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He is currently training for the Florida Federation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu State Championship on July 28, 2012.

?Jiu Jitsu is more than a martial art,? said Kaplan. ?It?s a way of life. The training is intense physically, but there?s also a mental component that is very difficult to master. When things get intense at the office I?m able to calm myself because of the things I?ve learned in Jiu Jitsu training. It works.?

Kaplan is coming off a first place finish in both the men?s No Gi intermediate ultra-heavy and men?s Gi ultra-heavy at the Naga West Palm Beach Grappling Championship in May.

?We?re really proud of what Bob and James have been able to do in competition,? said Restaino. ?But we?re also proud of what we?ve been able to do as a company lately. It?s just a bonus to be successful in and out of the office. Some companies have employees that take cigarette breaks ? Ours have push-up and pull-up competitions; that is when they actually take a break from their busy schedules.?

Titan List and Mailing Services is coming off back-to-back months of record sales. In June they dealt with over 90 mortgage shops and designed, printed, and mailed over 1 million direct marketing direct mail pieces. In July, they smashed those records by 20%.

Telephone therapy technique brings more Iraq and Afghanistan veterans into mental health treatment

Telephone therapy technique brings more Iraq and Afghanistan veterans into mental health treatment [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 26-Jul-2012

University of California - San Francisco

A brief therapeutic intervention called motivational interviewing, administered over the telephone, was significantly more effective than a simple "check-in" call in getting Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans with mental health diagnoses to begin treatment for their conditions, in a study led by a physician at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco.

Participants receiving telephone motivational interviewing also were significantly more likely to stay in therapy, and reported reductions in marijuana use and a decreased sense of stigma associated with mental health treatment.

The study was published electronically recently in General Hospital Psychiatry (May 25, 2012).

Lead author Karen Seal, MD, MPH, director of the Integrated Care Clinic at SFVAMC and an associate professor of medicine and psychiatry at UCSF, noted that 52 percent of the approximately half-million Iraq and Afghanistan veterans currently being seen by the VA have one or more mental health diagnoses, including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety or other related conditions.

"The VA has gone to extraordinary lengths to provide these veterans with state-of-the-art, evidence-based mental health treatment," she said. "The irony is that they are not necessarily engaging in this treatment. This study was positioned to try to connect our veterans with the treatments that are available to them."

Motivational interviewing, in which counselors encourage clients to explore and articulate discrepancies between their core values and their actual behaviors, has been used successfully as a psychotherapeutic intervention in other settings, said Seal.

"Articulating to the counselor how they want to change can motivate someone to make actual behavioral changes, such as engaging in treatment," said Seal. "The counselor then supports the client's perception that they can actually make these changes."

For the study, 73 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who screened positive for one or more mental health diagnoses, and were not currently in treatment, were randomly assigned either to a group that received four motivational interviewing sessions or a control group that received four neutral check-in sessions over a period of eight weeks.

"We thought that using the telephone to conduct this intervention would be a really good idea because these veterans are young, they're busy, they're in school, they have families and they all carry cell phones," Seal said.

By the end of the study, 62 percent of the motivational interviewing group had begun treatment, versus 26 percent of the control group. The motivational interviewing group was significantly more likely to stay in treatment, and also reported significantly decreased marijuana use and significantly less sense of stigma associated with mental health treatment than the control group.

The counselors who conducted the study intervention were not licensed clinicians, but "qualified people with masters' degrees who were trained for about eight hours," said Seal. "This means that the expense for personnel will not need to be huge if this becomes a routine procedure."

Seal emphasized that the study was a first-time pilot trial designed to assess the potential efficacy of telephone motivational interviewing, and that more research is needed to test the technique among larger groups of veterans. To that end, Seal plans a follow-up implementation study involving veterans at VA outpatient clinics in rural communities.

Co-authors of the study are Linda Abadjian, PhD, Nicole McCamish, MA, Ying Shi, PhD and Gary Tarasovsky, BA, of SFVAMC, and Kenneth Weingardt, PhD, of Palo Alto VA Health Care System and Stanford University School of Medicine. The authors had no conflicts of interest.

The study was supported by funds from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

SFVAMC has the largest medical research program in the national VA system, with more than 200 research scientists, all of whom are faculty members at UCSF.

Making Your Beer Crystal Clear | E Publishing

Beer is about a lot more than just a great tasting beverage. The fact that a culture has grown up around the joy of making and enjoying fine beer testifies how much beer has become part of how our culture works. The drinking of the beverage is only partially about the taste of the brew itself and very much about where you have your beer, what you drink it out of, how the beer looks in the glass and who you are drinking it with. And while you as a home made beer brewer cannot control many of those factors, you can control the quality and ambiance of the beer you make so it not only tastes great but is visually appealing as well.

If you pour a commercial beer from a bottle or a can, you may not be aware of how much those beer makers put into not just the taste but the affect of other senses have on the beer drinking experience. The way the beer pours, the aroma as you pour it, the head that wells up in your mug and how the beer looks in the glass all are just as important as the taste itself. The emphasis the big beer producers put on ascetics is so extreme that they even make the sound the can makes when you "pop a cold one" to be unique because they know that sound alone can prepare you to receive the taste of a great beer drinking experience.

The truth is none of that will change whether the beer itself is of high quality or is good to drink. But visual appeal matters. One area of visual appeal that you have some control over when making your own beer at home is clarity. Clarity simply refers to how the beer looks in the glass. If you can see through the beer and it is a consistent beige or amber color, that is visually appealing. But if things are floating around in the beer, even if they are perfectly harmless byproducts of the brewing process, that can diminish how inviting your beer is to enjoy and even diminish how enjoyable the beer is to drink even if the beer itself is of high quality.

A lot of the "stuff" that floats around is beer comes from the yeast that is crucial to the fermentation process that makes beer beer. Some yeasts are better than others about settling out of the beer during fermentation. Another source of visible material in the beer comes from what is referred to as non-microbiological particles or NMPs which are a byproduct of the brewing process. Again, none of these visible materials are harmful to consume nor do they reduce the value of the beer. They just look bad and hurt the clarity of the beer which is one way beer is measured for quality.

Many of the NMPs are introduced during the initial creation of the wort which is phase one of any brewing operation. The wort is boiled at a high temperature for a significant enough period of time to cause the proteins in the ingredients to break down and become part of the fluidity of the wort rather than remain in a substance state or a "floc" which remains visible in the finished product. To avoid this make sure your boil sustains a temperature of 215F for 90 minutes to assure complete processing of the proteins.

Another important brewing step that you can do to reduce visible agents in your beer is to cool the wort very quickly. By bringing the temperature down rapidly, the clarity is vastly enhanced as is the flavor and overall quality of the beer. The best way to accomplish such rapid cooling is to move the wort quickly from the brewing process to a very cool environment or using a specialized wort cooler to quickly bring that temperature down and eliminate many of the flocs that might be there if the cooling goes more slowly.

Seeking beer clarity can become a major passion of yours as a home brewer and there is a whole science to using clarifying agents such as Irish Moss to enhance beer clarity without diminishing beer quality or taste. Learning good techniques for making your beer clear and appealing is just another step in your ongoing quest to become the best amateur beer making possible. And that is a quest worth pursuing.

How To Make Home Improvements Successfully | Furniture Cowboy

Putting some work into making your home more attractive can really make you feel good about yourself. But where do you begin the house design? Well, you?re in the right place. We will go over some great tips and tactics below and discuss how you can tackle those home improvements.Replacing your outlet covers with new ones will add a fresh look to a tired room. With time, outlet covers tend to get dirty and dingy. If you replace the covers on your outlets it will add a nice fresh appearance. Ask David Reid for more advice.

Sitting on chair cushions flattens them over time. One good way to renew your cushions is to put them out in the sun. The sun evaporates the moisture from the filling, and they bounce right back to their original shape. Ensure that you flip over your cushions and do not leave them out in the sun for extended periods of time.Have your chimney inspected regularly by a professional. This is especially important when using a wood burning fireplace but even other heat sources work best with a clean chimney. Toxic fumes could build up in your home or a chimney fire could occur, said Darren Munn.

Before you begin your next home improvement project, develop an itemized budget. Many homeowners grossly underestimate the money involved in improvements and this mistake can be very costly. So make sure that you plan ahead of time and estimate the cost of the improvements you want to make. When considering residing your house, you should look for different varieties of insulation. There are many kinds of insulation available, including stiff foam insulation, absorbent house wrap, or even a system that will completely protect your walls. Compare the costs to find the best fit for you.

A chain-link or wooden fence may be a good idea if you?ve purchased a home near a woody area or undeveloped location. This will keep curious animals like skunks, coyotes, and rabbits at bay ? especially if you plan to plant a garden. A great preventative tip to implement to save money in the long run is to check on the caulking in the home to make sure it?s holding up. You will want to look over the calking in your bathroom, kitchen and around windows. It can get small holes in it and wetness can creep into your walls and make mold; this is a problem for some as they are allergic. If a significant amount of water leaks through these cracks and holes, it can eventually rot the floor, causing structural issues. When applying the new caulk, ensure all of the old material has been removed and dry thoroughly. When you take care in preparation, the new caulk will adhere correctly and create a waterproof seal.

Colorado 'Batman' movie shooting suspect was Ph.D. student

Twelve people were killed and 59 were injured in Aurora, Colo., during a sold-out midnight premier of the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" when 24-year-old James Holmes unloaded four weapons' full of ammunition into the unsuspecting crowd.

The number of casualties makes the incident the largest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Holmes, a graduate student at a nearby college with a clean arrest record, entered the movie auditorium wearing a ballistics helmet, bullet-proof vest, bullet-proof leggings, gas mask and gloves. He detonated multiple smoke bombs, and then began firing at viewers in the sold-out auditorium, police said today.

Bullets from the spree tore through the theater and into adjoining theaters, where at least one other person was struck and injured. Ten members of "The Dark Knight Rises" audience were killed in theater, while two others died later at area hospitals. Numerous patrons were in critical condition at six local hospitals, the Aurora police said this afternoon.

Holmes was apprehended within minutes of the 12:39 a.m. shooting at his car behind the theater, where police found him in full riot gear and carrying three weapons, including a AR-15 assault rifle, which can hold upwards of 100 rounds, a Remington 12 gauge shot gun, and a .40 Glock handgun. A fourth handgun was found in the vehicle. Agents from the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms are tracing the weapons.

According to police sources, Holmes told the officers arresting him that he was "The Joker," referring to the villain in the second installment of the Batman movie trilogy, "The Dark Knight." He also warned police that he had booby-trapped his apartment, leading officers to evacuate the Aurora apartment building.

Police Chief Dan Oates said today that police and bomb squads have found a large number of explosive devices and trip wires at Holmes' apartment and have not yet decided how to proceed without setting off explosions.

"The pictures we have from inside the apartment are pretty disturbing considering how elaborate the apartment is booby trapped," police said outside of the apartment complex today. The "flammable and explosive" materials could have blown up Holmes' apartment building and the ones near it, police said.

The apartment complex is home exclusively to University of Colorado Medical Center students, patients, and staff members, residents tell ABC News.

Moviegoer Christopher Ramos today recalled the real-life horror of the midnight premiere of the latest Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises," in Aurora, Colo., as a gunman decked in riot gear set off smoke bombs and opened fire on the unsuspecting audience.

"People were running everywhere, running on top of me, like kicking me, jumping over me. And there were bodies on the ground," Ramos said. "I froze up. I was scared. I honestly thought I was going to die."

"The image in our heads is stuck in there. I still have the ticket right here and honestly, I'm never going to forget this night at all. Because it was the first time I saw something that was real. Like a real-life nightmare that was there, not dreaming of," Ramos told ABC News today.

Witnesses in the movie theater said Holmes saw smoke and heard gunshots that they thought were part of the movie until they saw Holmes standing in front of the screen, after entering from an emergency exit. Holmes methodically stalked the aisles of the theater, shooting people at random, as panicked movie-watchers in the packed auditorium tried to escape, witnesses said.

At one point the shooter exited the theater only to wait outside the doors and pick off patrons as they tried to exit, witness Jennifer Seeger told "Good Afternoon America."

Photos: Shooting "Dark Knight Rises" Screening in Aurora, Colorado

"You just smelled smoke and you just kept hearing it, you just heard bam bam bam, non-stop. The gunman never had to reload. Shots just kept going, kept going, kept going," one witness told ABC News.

"I'm with coworkers and we're on the floor praying to God we don't get shot, and the gunshots continue on and on, and when the sound finally stopped, we started to get up and people were just bleeding," another theatergoer said.

The suspected shooter will face his first court appearance next week, according to district attorney Carol Chambers.

Holmes, originally of San Diego, moved to Aurora to pursue his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado medical center, living just blocks from the hospital in an apartment that police say is now laced with explosives and being searched by HazMat teams.

Federal law enforcement sources tell ABC News that Holmes bought a ticket to the movie, slipped out of the theater once it began and propped open the emergency exit before gathering his weapons and gear and coming back into the theater. Once inside, he opened fire.

A San Diego woman identifying herself as James Holmes's mother spoke briefly with ABC News this morning.

She had awoken unaware of the news of the shooting and had not been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.

"You have the right person," she said.

"I need to call the police," she added. "I need to fly out to Colorado."

The woman and her husband later released a statement saying their "hearts go out to those who involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved. We are still trying to process this information and we appreciate that people will respect our privacy."

The highly-anticipated third installment of the Batman trilogy opened to packed auditoriums around the country at midnight showings on Friday morning, and features a villain named Bane who wears a bulletproof vest and gas mask. Trailers for the movie show explosions at public events including a football game. Though many moviegoers dressed in costume to attend the opening night screening, police have made no statements about any connection between the gunman's motives and the movie.

Police in New York have intensified security around showings of the film throughout the five boroughs today, with Police Commissioner Ray Kelley saying that "as a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the 'The Dark Knight Rises' is playing."

The Paris premiere of the movie has been cancelled in the wake of the shootings. "Warner Bros. and the filmmakers are deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time," the movie's producers said in a statement.

Witnesses watching movies in theaters next to the one where the shooting took place said bullets tore through the theater walls and they heard screaming.

"The suspect throws tear gas in the air, and as the tear gas appears he started shooting," said Lamar Lane, who was watching the midnight showing of the movie with his brother. "It was very hard to breathe. I told my brother to take cover. It took awhile. I started seeing flashes and screaming, I just saw blood and people yelling and a quick glimpse of the guy who had a gas mask on. I was pushed out. There was chaos, we started running."

One witness said she saw people dropping to the ground after the gunshots began.

"We were maybe 20 or 30 minutes into the movie and all you hear, first you smell smoke, everybody thought it was fireworks or something like that, and then you just see people dropping and the gunshots are constant," witness Christ Jones told ABC's Denver affiliate KMGH. "I heard at least 20 to 30 rounds within that minute or two."

A man who talked to a couple who was inside the theater told ABC News, "They got up and they started to run through the emergency exit, and that when she turned around, she said all she saw was the guy slowly making his way up the stairs and just firing at people, just picking random people," he said. "The gunshots continued to go on and on and then after we didn't hear anything...we finally got up and there was people bleeding, there was people obviously may have been actually dead or anything, and we just ran up out of there, there was chaos everywhere."

Witnesses and victims were taken to Gateway High School for questioning.

Hundreds of police and FBI agents are involved in the investigation. A senior official who is monitoring the situation in Washington said that early guidance based on the early snapshot of this man's background indicated that this act does not appear to be linked to radical terrorism or anything related to Islamic terrorism.

Dr. Comilla Sasson, at the University of Colorado Hospital where many of the victims were taken, said they are currently operating on nine critical patients and have treated 22 in all. She called the hospital "an absolutely terrifying scene all night."

"The good news is that the 3-month-old has actually been discharged home and is in the care of their parents

In a statement, President Obama said, "Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded."
