Colo. brewery says river water tainted by wildfire

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) ? The maker of Fat Tire beer says it's using a reserve water supply because the water in northern Colorado's Poudre (POO'-der) River is tainted by a wildfire that destroyed hundreds of homes in June.

New Belgium Brewery objected when it was told it will soon have to go back to using water from the river. The company says if that happens, it would kill the flavor in the beer and make it undrinkable.

According to KUSA-TV (http://tinyurl.com/8s5g7oy ), the brewery is working with Fort Collins to continue using the water reserve.

The High Park Fire west of Fort Collins was one of the most destructive in Colorado history. It burned more than 250 homes, killed one person and scorched 136 square miles of mountain terrain.

Belgian pedophile accomplice gets early release

BRUSSELS (AP) ? A woman who let two 8-year-old girls starve in a cellar and helped her pedophile husband carry out horrific abuse of other girls went from prison to a convent Tuesday, outraging Belgians who opposed the early release of one of the country's most despised criminals.

The nation's highest court approved Michelle Martin's release after serving 16 years of a 30-year prison term for her role in the mid-1990s kidnappings, rapes and killings by her then-husband, Marc Dutroux.

Martin left prison in an unmarked vehicle late Tuesday for a Clarisse convent in Malonne, a 75-kilometer (45-mile) trip south of the capital, where her lawyer said she will seek atonement for her crimes. Over 100 people shouted insults at her as she arrived, some trying to break through police barriers.

"There is only one word for this. This is simply absurd. But I will have to accept it," said Paul Marchal, whose daughter An, was one of Dutroux's victims. "Concerning Martin, my fight is over and done. I lost."

Martin's lawyer, Thierry Moreau, insisted Tuesday that his 52-year-old client deserved a shot at a better life.

"''There is something human remaining in Mrs. Martin, even though she acknowledges herself she is responsible for very serious acts," Moreau said. "She paid the price for it. She did it in respect of the law, and now there is this project where she wants to redeem herself and this will be another way to do her sentence."

The Dutroux case horrified the nation and led to widespread changes in Belgian police procedures. Police had visited the home twice in the mid-1990s and didn't find the kidnapped girls, although they heard voices, and ignored a letter from Dutroux's mother that expressed concern her son was abusing young girls.

Dutroux, an unemployed electrician and convicted pedophile on parole at the time of the crimes, was arrested in 1996 and convicted eight years later of abducting, imprisoning and raping six girls between the summers of 1995 and 1996. He was also found guilty of murdering two of the six girls, who ranged in age from 8 to 19 years old.

The last two of Dutroux's kidnap victims were found alive in his basement a few days after his arrest.

Martin was accused of conspiracy in the kidnappings and imprisonment leading to the deaths of the two starved girls, who were held in a secret dungeon specially built in a cellar. Martin said she had been too scared to go into the cellar to feed them while Dutroux was serving a four-month jail term for car theft.

One year after they were kidnapped, the bodies of the two were found in the garden of a house that Dutroux owned.

Martin has depicted herself as a passive culprit of the psychopath Dutroux, but was blamed for aiding her husband when he went on a depraved and murderous spree and letting the young girls die.

The prospect of her release had spawned demonstrations in the past few weeks, with demands to keep her in jail.

Several policemen were stationed near the convent even before the verdict was announced and fluorescent graffiti near the convent protesting Martin's arrival was removed. At a religious statue near the gate, teddy bears sat next to a picture of the two eight-year-old girls who starved to death in Dutroux's dungeon in 1996.

The lawyer for Jean-Denis Lejeune, whose 8-year-old daughter Julie was one of the girls who starved to death, said the families would work to change the law that allowed Martin's early release and make sure victims get a bigger say how long convicted criminals have to stay behind bars.

"We will first have to ask the politicians to change the law and, secondly, we will have to go to Strasbourg," where the European Court of Human Rights can still have an impact, said lawyer Georges-Henri Beauthier.

That process could take years, however.

Neighbors of the convent worried about Martin's influence. A children's school is close by.

"My children are studying here," said Malonne resident Fabienne Huboaux. "We are afraid, afraid to see what is going to happen with them when they are going to go to class."

Home Addition Series: Evacuation

Last week we introduced our Home Addition Series and we are excited to pick up where we left off!? Since our last post, the home?s sun room has been demoed and excavation is not only underway but completed!

After the demolition we began digging out the foundation for the home?s new addition.? We will be adding a full basement, designed to be finished later when our homeowners needs more space to grow.? During the excavation we came across both gas and electrical lines that needed to be relocated to run through the home?s foundation once completed.

Once the excavation was finished we started the concrete phase, beginning with footings.? Footings exist to transfer the structural loads from the building, snow load, and live load, into the ground.? As such, footings are the backbone of a well built home.? To prepare for the footings, we began by laying out the foundation, forming the footings to fit, and placing the rebar.

With the footings in place, the city completed a footing inspection.? They checked the placement and size of the rebar used.? Once our work passed inspection, we poured the footings.? The finished foundation wall resulted in an eight-foot by twelve-foot block foundation, core filled every forty-inches, with an eight-foot basement height.

Next, we placed the interior and exterior drain tiles.? The drain tiles will be used to divert water along the foundation wall to a sump pump basket where it can be diverted away from the house.? We placed the drain tiles next to the footings and covered them with sand and crushed rock.

Our next steps will be to finish the concrete working, frame out the addition, install the floor joists and subfloor and frame the exterior walls.? Stay tuned as we continue on this exciting home improvement adventure!

Danny Lipford: This week we?re in Atlanta, Georgia stepping up to a new level of construction.

Danny Lipford: Over the last 20 years Americans have become far more environmentally aware, and that awareness has extended far beyond just recycling a few soft drink bottles and cans to the way we approach building homes. This week we?re going to look at the green building concept and how it aims to really minimize the impact that building homes has on our environment.

Now that can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people and we?re going to explore a number of different ideas including how to increase the energy efficiency of your home and how to use the right materials and the right processes to really minimize that impact. Now we?re just minutes away from downtown Atlanta and we?re about to go through an entire community of green homes. Stay with us.

Danny Lipford: The stairway just really flows together well Jim. This week we?re looking at different ways to build or remodel being more environmentally conscience and to help us out this week Jim Hackler with Green Builder Magazine. Jim this is the type of home that I envision when I think of a green built home.

Jim Hackler: Yeah most people think oh it?s made from recycled tires and straw bales and it looks like a spaceship. But the reality is you can be environmental and have a beautiful house.

Danny Lipford: Well I know the idea of building green has kind of changed a little bit over the last few years. What is considered let?s say the definition of a green built home these days?

Jim Hackler: Well this house actually really showcases a lot of things that you look for in an environmental home is basically the same thing you look for in any house.

Danny Lipford: Ok.

Jim Hackler: That the house is very energy efficient, that it is quieter, it?s actually right next to downtown and you don?t hear the traffic or anything outside. Some other features, you use materials that are going to last longer so it?s more durable.

Danny Lipford: Right.

Jim Hackler: And then it?s healthier inside. Indoor air quality?s one of the big concerns and you tend to get better air inside.

Danny Lipford: Well with the interstate being so close there and you can?t hear it all, and of course that?s great when you have that acoustic barrier that you have with a home that?s built this tight and this well, but I bet the homeowners are really happy with this thing.

Kim Miller: We weren?t even aware of the neighborhood at first but knew there was a development in Atlanta near the city that was supposed to be this green properties and the homes looked old. I can remember looking at the first picture of this house and going are you sure that that?s a brand new home to the realtor because it actually looked like it had been in existence for a long time, especially with the porch and the old yellow brick. And then when we first pulled in here and saw the park and the development we knew this was the right place to be.

Mitch Miller: This is actually our sixth house that we?ve owned and I think what we really liked about this area is what was the house, was kind of the combination of old and new. We really liked the old classic southern homes and we came from a home that was built back in the 1920s that we renovated to make ultra modern. So our idea was are we better to have an old house that we make new or have a new house that looks old, and I think we decided that the new that looks old is the way to go.

You know you buy a house and you start to learn the processes of the house and this house definitely had a lot more things in it. I love my outdoor, I love my landscaping and I spend a lot of time landscaping, and I?ve got a trip irrigation that runs through that waters everything automatically for me. The solar panels are another thing, so you start to see all these things in the house and you see all this technology and you?re like, oh my God I have to learn all this stuff, I have to be an expert on solar panels.

And really the answer?s no. It just runs itself and that?s kind of the beauty of really all the energy things in the house itself. Nothing really has to be maintained by the owner, everything is automatic for us.

Danny Lipford: I understand the Millers have been in the house about 6 months. I would guess by now they probably are realizing how energy efficient this home is.

Jim Hackler: That?s right Danny last night here in Atlanta we went down to the low 30s and Mitch told me they didn?t even had to turn on their heat.

Danny Lipford: Well that?s a good test of how efficient the house is, but a lot of technology kind of a high end approach here. But you really don?t have to have that to really have a green home do you.

Jim Hackler: That?s so important for people to realize that you can have a green home that?s high end, affordable, or you can even have a renovation that?s made more environmentally sensitive.

Danny Lipford: OK, some of the simple things I guess that we use on almost any addition or any renovation really plays into this.

Jim Hackler: Right like windows.

Danny Lipford: Uh huh.

Jim Hackler: These windows here, double paned, they have the glazing that?s called Low E and they?re filled with argon gas that makes them a little more energy efficient but?

Danny Lipford: I see.

Jim Hackler: But really good, good practical things that you can put into your house, compact fluorescents. This is something easy that you can switch out, very energy efficient, and they?ll last for years.

Danny Lipford: And they don?t have the build up of heat that you have with the incandescent bulbs.

Jim Hackler: Exactly, energy star appliances, any of the stores you can go out to, look for those and the top of the line for helping save energy and water as well.

Danny Lipford: I recognize this thing?

Jim Hackler: That?s right.

Danny Lipford: We changed a lot of these out, the programmable thermostat, that helps a lot.

Jim Hackler: That?s such a no-brainer in fact I just switched mine out a couple weeks ago and if I can do it anybody can do it.

Danny Lipford: Now what about some of the other technology here within this house because this is a little more complex than some tradition homes of course.

Jim Hackler: This is a show home and there are some really cool, sexy technologies. For example they collect their rain water and then they actually have a satellite system that is able to tap into the forecast so that they don?t water the lawns on?

Danny Lipford: Wow.

Jim Hackler: ?when we?re expecting rain. Some other things, tankless hot water heaters, they?re energy efficient and save on water. And another thing too is they have what?s called open cell foam insulation. This serves as insulation as well as air sealant, which means that you don?t have the drafts that you might get in some other homes.

Danny Lipford: Well there?s a lot to know about green building and we?ll have more for you coming up next.

Joe Truini: The best piece of advice I?ve ever gotten from a professional painter was to buy the very best brushes you can afford. Now good paint brushes are expensive but if you take care of them they?ll last you a lifetime.

Now, to make a brush last a lifetime though, the first rule is you have to clean it thoroughly after each and every use. But to make that job even easier, what I?ve discovered is if you prepare the brush before you use it, it makes clean up really quick and easy. In this case I?m going to take some masking tape, this is blue painter?s tape, about one and a half inches wide.

I?m going to wrap it around the metal ferrule which is the band that joins the handle to the bristles. I?m going to wrap it around the ferrule, overlapping the bristles by about a quarter of an inch or so. And what that?s going to do is prevent paint from seeping up and getting stuck in that joint between the metal and bristles. Because when you dip it into the can the paint will get in there and dry, and it?ll be hard to clean it up because the next time you go to use the brush the little dried paint chips will break off into your new paint finish.

So when you?re done painting just peel this off and what you?ll discover is that you have a perfectly clean joint between the ferrule and the bristles. Then you just clean the brush and store it properly and you?ll be ready to use on your next project.

Danny Lipford: This week we?re looking at the strong building trend of building green and to help me out on this show, Jim Hackler with Green Builder magazine. Jim what a porch on the front of this house.

Jim Hackler: Isn?t this wonderful? And what a lot of people don?t realize is the wrap around porches you have in the south were really to shade the windows so you didn?t get as hot during the summer.

Danny Lipford: Right, right. And I can see they?ve used a lot of high quality materials with composite decking and the different columns. I guess that?s part of green building as well.

Jim Hackler: The durability, low maintenance, it?s all part of the story.

Danny Lipford: Now I understand that all of these houses were built with that green approach.

Jim Hackler: They?re certified under Atlanta?s green building program called Earth Craft House it?s similar to a number of green building rating systems that are across the country. And another wonderful story about this community is that it used to be an industrial sight, in fact the soil was so contaminated with metal shavings they had to ship most of it out. But what the developers had in mind was to create this sense of community in this wonderful neighborhood.

Walter Brown: And what we started with was 100% concrete coverage out here, we recycled about 120 million pounds of concrete, used it in all of our roads, under ground, and so forth. And that began the process of turning this into Glenwood Park that you see today.

We?re here at what we call our central park, this is actually Glenwood Park, it?s also a storm water park. And the pond in the distance there is used to collect all the rain water that falls on the streets here and we have a well that?s dug beside that. And between the well and the pond we?re able to use about 1.5 million gallons a year for irrigation at Glenwood Park. We don?t use any city water for irrigation. That?s a very important feature to us.

We also clean all the water before it goes back into the system and it also is flood control and the field could in a huge flood actually inundate itself up to the little playground over here and then it would drain quickly back down. Many features are built into Glenwood Park that we consider green. The sidewalk that we?re walking on right now is actually 50% recycled material using slag and fly ash. And that?s a very green product that anyone can select it?s called a ternary mix.

Also, the houses that you see are part of the story. Every one of them is built to a local green building standard called Earth Craft and that typically translates to about a 20 to 30 percent reduction in energy use in the home, a little less water use, as well as better indoor air quality, tighter construction. A lot of cellulose and foam sprays are used to really make sure these homes are very, very tight.

Well, I think what we?re most excited about having done Glenwood Park and getting near it?s termination in development is how successful it?s been from the community perspective. People really seem to love living here and they keep telling us over and over again you know I moved from another neighborhood, even some in town neighborhoods, or suburban neighborhoods, where I didn?t know my neighbors and here they know everybody.

Yes, the houses are closer together; they?re brought closer to the street intentionally, with porches lining the street. You can?t avoid your neighbor here. You know if you?re going to be a recluse you don?t want to live here because these people interact constantly with each other. They have conversations together, they meet in the park, and it?s part of the story of the redeveloping the inner core of Atlanta. But we think we?ve been able to put it together in a very positive way here, and we?re very excited about that.

Danny Lipford: Boy I could really get used to this, having your favorite coffee shop and other stores just within walking distance of a house that just makes a lot of sense.

Jim Hackler: It?s hard to believe we?re only a block away from Mitch?s house. It?s part of a growing trend across the country it?s called traditional neighborhood development, the idea behind it is creating neighborhoods like they used to be before we had automobiles.

Danny Lipford: Right.

Jim Hackler: In fact Georgia Tech has a study where they find people who live in these neighborhoods are 20% less likely to use their car ,which of course means saving gas and we?re helping out the environment.

Danny Lipford: Plus you save a lot of time instead of looking at the windshield for several hours a day you?re able to enjoy this. Now we spoke to Walter earlier he talked about how they use a lot of recycled materials in some of the common spaces, I know that?s also a big part of green building.

Jim Hackler: It certainly is. In the house that we were in the hardwood floors are actually made from reclaimed lumber and the driveway is made from ground up asphalt where it?s in a pebble form that allows the water to percolate through so you don?t have storm water problems.

Danny Lipford: Oh ok, I guess that helps a lot. Now what are some of the other aspects about green building that they?ve embraced around here?

Jim Hackler: Here?s one of the favorite one of most homeowners is durability; it means you don?t have to spend a lot of time painting you house or maintaining it. A number of the homes here have features like fiber cement.

Danny Lipford: Mhmm.

Jim Hackler: What?s great about that? Termites can?t eat it.

Danny Lipford: Right.

Jim Hackler: You paint it, the paint lasts sometimes 15 to 20 years.

Danny Lipford: Yeah we?re seeing that being used all over the place and of course the durability of brick and stucco, you can?t really beat that. Hey Jim thanks for showing us around this neighborhood and kind of getting us up to date on some of these green building practices and hey thanks for a pretty good cup of coffee too.

Jim Hackler: My pleasure.

Danny Lipford: More and more homeowners are choosing natural stone for their countertop, but these selections come with a little higher price tag. Now you can get the look of these luxury surfaces with a laminate. Wilsonart high definition laminate has subtle variations in both a matte and gloss finish on the material, so it looks as though it has the same depth and texture that you would see with some of the natural stone surface. But because it?s a laminate it?s more affordable so you really can get the look for a lot less.

Now here?s a laminate that has a wear resistance that?s three times the industry standard; so you?re free to cook, clean, raise children, spill, and basically live in your kitchen. The surface is also non-porous; so unlike other costly surfaces, you won?t need to reseal your countertops from time to time. And the price depends on how much you need and the type of edge treatment that you select, but generally it runs around $25 per square foot installed.

Danny Lipford: This week we?re looking at the concept of building green, and we?re in a community where all of the homes are considered green homes. Even this park area has recycled granite that was salvaged from buildings in downtown Atlanta, even a little graffiti left over on the face of some of the pieces. Now this trend is so popular it kind of begs for a national standard on what really constitutes a green home. That?s exactly what the folks at the US Green Building Council thought so they developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system, or LEED.

Laura Uhde: LEED for homes is an important certification because it provides a national standard for all homes to adhere to that ensure that the house has taken into account how this home is going to impact the society, the environment, and generations to come. So by obtaining the LEED for home certification you are documenting to the homeowner what steps you?ve taken to improve the house, the home?s durability, quality, and its impact on the environment.

Danny Lipford: An architecturally designed home really has some very distinctive features and the services of an architect can really help you obtain that level and that look that you really want for the outside of your home but the same is true for the interior. Maybe a kitchen or a bath or that special designer look on the interior is well worth the professional services that are available. Now if you want to win the best yard in your neighborhood think about a landscape architect as well, but have you ever heard of an eco-designer?

Jillian Cooke: Well, the difference between an eco-sensitive designer and a regular designer is that an eco-sensitive designer really has taken the time to respect the environment and teach and educate our clients. What that means is through different products and resources that are available to us. If you have an eco-sensitive environment you should have a healthy environment as well and that?s basically just making sure that you have low toxins in everything that you use or no toxins at all.

Eco-sensitive paint is a perfect example of that. Inclusive of the different resources that we might be bringing into the home that might be different types of wood, making sure they?re grown in a controlled environment, that they?re stamped by the forestry department as being sustainable. Really it is a team effort but I would say the builder and the designer probably are the ones that drive the bus in terms of getting everyone on board and making sure that they?re all thinking in a certain way.

Danny Lipford: This Atlanta home which is being built on the LEED standard is Jillian?s latest project and it features some really unique green elements like recycled drywall, veneer doors made from pressed wheat, cabinets made from eucalyptus grass, and systems that save tons on energy. But how do builders and subcontractors who use these materials feel about this trend?

Jerome Rossetti: Most everybody gets an education on the job every day anyway so my subs are receptive for using the new products. Some of them roll their eyes at first and let?s say usually they say this is not even more difficult to use than the standard product so. I mean this house has been kind of a learning situation for a lot of the subs but it?s worked out well.

Danny Lipford: The environmental awareness that green building generates has even changed the way job sites operate. This machine called Grindzilla recycles scrap building materials like lumber and drywall. It grinds up the wasted material and removes the nails and screws so that the resulting mulch can be used for erosion control or as soil amendments right on the jobsite.

John Ulitsch: What we do is we divert about 70% of the waste by weight out on a builder?s site and we turn their waste into product so that the builders can use it supplement some of the cost. In turn we divert all that material from going in a landfill which costs everybody money going to landfill in their taxes.

Danny Lipford: One thing I really like about this community is there are so many different architectural styles within this neighborhood and that just illustrates how you don?t have to compromise on design or style to have a home that?s considered green. And these guys must be doing something right because most of these houses sell before they?re ever even completed.

Trisha Craven Worley: There are lots of reasons that you need to trim or prune a tree and actually it?s one of my favorite jobs in the garden. Now this particular tulip tree, you know it has a mind of its own like so many trees. Up here unfortunately it has a dead branch and I?m going to get to that in just a little while. But there are a lot of branches that cross over and that?s really not very good for the tree.

I removed this one a little bit earlier, so that I could get to this long branch. Now I have already removed some of the weight out here and I also cut it into 3 foot lengths because in my area we don?t have collection right at the curb, we have to do it in bundles and then it?s picked up for recycling.

Now, one of the reasons you want to reduce that weight is when you get to this point you don?t want the weight hanging on the limb. Because when you make your final cut close to the trunk you want to make sure it?s nice and clean and if you have that weight holding it down it?s going to have tendency to pull the branch and that might cause it to tear, tearing leads to disease. And what you want is a healthy tree.

Danny Lipford: Mitch and Kim have a great looking house and isn?t it neat this whole community has embraced green building practices. Now green building will cost you just a little bit more, 10 to 15%, but just think how much better it is for our environment and how much these folks will be saving every month on their utility bill.

BOSTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney may not have set out on the road to the Republican presidential nomination if not for a private meeting between strangers.

More than a decade ago, the 54-year-old Olympics CEO was at a crossroads as the closing ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Games approached. That's when Kerry Healey, head of the Massachusetts GOP, traveled across the country to meet with Romney. Inside the privacy of his office, Healey pressed the longtime businessman to run for governor. French figure skating judges waited outside as the meeting ran long.

"We had never met before. It was a cold call," Healey recalls.

Romney would soon agree to run, a decision that opened the next phase of his life.

Nine months after that February 2002 meeting, Romney was elected governor of Massachusetts. The post became the launching pad for a national political career that reaches its pinnacle Thursday when he accepts the Republican presidential nomination.

Those who know him well say it was not ambition that pushed Romney into politics anew after a failed 1994 Massachusetts Senate run. Instead, they describe a man driven to lead, likely the result of growing up in a family that emphasized service above all else. They say Romney truly believed in his own unique ability to solve problems.

He ran toward challenges, says longtime friend and business partner Bob White.

"A lot of people who just tuned in this presidential year haven't seen this history of stepping forward," White says. "It's that stepping forward that his parents talked about, not necessarily just public office. It how he's wired."

Indeed, Romney's father, George Romney, served as Michigan governor. He unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination in 1968, later becoming a member of President Richard Nixon's Cabinet. Romney's mother, Lenore, later was an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senate.

It was clear early into Romney's one term as Massachusetts governor that he, like his father, saw opportunities to lead on a larger stage.

Less than a year after taking office, Romney sought and won the chairmanship of the Republican Governors Association. He raised tens of millions of dollars to help elect Republicans across the nation. In 2004, he made his first trip to Iowa, home of the leadoff presidential caucuses, to speak at the state GOP's fall banquet some weeks before President George W. Bush's re-election.

Romney would visit Iowa three times in 2005 and nine times in 2006. That year, he spent 212 days outside of Massachusetts. One trip included a visit to Iraq and Afghanistan to enhance his international credentials as his state grappled with a devastating flood.

His national focus hurt his standing back home. The fall before he left office, two in three Massachusetts residents disapproved of his job performance.

But by that time, there was little doubt Romney would seek the presidency. He already had declined to seek a second term as governor. He announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee for the 2008 race on his next-to-last day as Massachusetts governor.

Romney quickly proved he was a prolific fundraiser and carved out a reputation that year as the conservative alternative to Sen. John McCain by shifting to the right on key issues after tacking more to the center as Massachusetts governor. He spent millions to win symbolic test votes and millions more to support a bloated staff.

Nearly always perfectly groomed and wearing a suit, Romney ended up struggling to connect with voters. His Mormon faith proved an impediment, especially in Iowa and South Carolina. And his reversals on social issues gave rivals fodder to tag him as a flip-flopping candidate with no core belief system.

Romney, who later acknowledged that his strategy was flawed, would ultimately lose the nomination to McCain.

Ann Romney vowed that her husband would not run a second time.

But feelings had changed around Christmas of 2010 when the Romney family met at the kitchen table to discuss the prospect of another bid.

"I said, 'Is it too late to fix the country? And Mitt said something interesting. He said, 'Well it is not too late yet, but it is getting late," Ann Romney told a Florida audience recently. "And knowing that there was still time, I said, 'There is no question whether we go forward or don't go forward, because it is up to you to save the country, and so we must go forward.'"

Romney was convinced he had to do things differently the second time around.

He worked to shed his buttoned-up image by wearing more casual attire, such as jeans, sneakers and shirts with the sleeves rolled up. Facing a weak Republican field, his campaign's rallying cry became "leaner and meaner." He hired a smaller staff and listened to fewer consultants. He stockpiled tons of cash and an outside super political action committee made up of former staffers did the same. He focused his pitch on the economy and defeating Barack Obama. And he walked a careful line between presenting himself as acceptable to the tea party ? a new insurgent group ? and catering to it.

Starting in Iowa, Romney and his allies eviscerated his rivals ? particularly former House Speaker Newt Gingrich ? on TV, burying them in negative ads. Romney was briefly announced the victor by a narrow margin before the Iowa GOP reversed course and declared former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum the winner. But by that point, Romney had cruised to victory in next-up New Hampshire. Gingrich then rose in South Carolina, shellacking Romney after casting him as a job-killer. Then came Florida, and Romney easily overtook the competition.

He clinched the nomination months later, then quickly set his sights on his next goal: defeating Obama.

Now Romney stands at the precipice of formally becoming the party's standard-bearer, and possibly the country's next president.

It's that image that first flashed in Healey's mind after her meeting with Romney a decade ago. By the time she left, Healey ? who would become Romney's lieutenant governor ? couldn't help but agree with the whispers that had already begun about his future.

Says Healey: "I had no doubt on my first meeting with him that he had the potential to be the president of the United States."

Do All Women Need Protection From Sexually Transmitted Diseases ...

Do all women need protection from sexually transmitted diseases can be a very sensitive subject when discussing women?s health care. There is a fine line between what women need and what their morals affect and it should be a personal decision for every woman. A decision about health protection should not be taken lightly either.

Vaccinations protecting a woman from cervical cancer for instance may be very important for women of any age who are sexually active with different partners. However, a woman who is faithful and is married to the same partner, assuming that partner is also faithful may not? be in need of the vaccine that protects against cervical cancer. This is just one example of what a vaccine does to protect a woman and how her personal choices and life style influence what protection she might need.

Birth control methods should not be considered necessarily a protection against a sexually transmitted disease. The birth control pill for instance does not protect a woman against HIV/Aids, chlamydia, or any venereal disease. It protects against pregnancy only.

A woman has many choices about her health and her sexual health should always be at the top of the list when thinking about protection and prevention. Routine pelvic exams and breast exams by a reliable health care provider are an essential part of women?s health. Make it your goal to make your appointment soon if you have not had a check up within the last year. It could mean your health. You can discuss your lifestyle and your concerns about prevention at your appointment so that you are doing all you can to protect your female health.

Major quake hits off El Salvador, no damage reported

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean off El Salvador late on Sunday, triggering a brief tsunami warning along a stretch of the central American coast but causing no major damage or casualties, early reports indicated.

The quake hit about 74 miles offshore at a depth of just over 20 km (12 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said. It earlier gave the magnitude as 7.4.

A small tsunami hit the El Salvador port of Acajutla following the quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

It issued and then cancelled a tsunami alert for El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama and Mexico.

Emergency services in El Salvador and Guatemala said the quake had caused no discernible damage, and there were no early reports of damage or casualties from elsewhere in the region.

In the El Salvador capital San Salvador, several residents reached by phone very early on Monday morning said they had not felt the quake.

There were no immediate reports of damage to shipping.

HBT: Angels' Pujols out until Tuesday

Angels first baseman Albert Pujols hasn?t appeared in a game since tweaking his right calf while running the bases Wednesday night in Boston. And his idle status won?t change for at least another couple days.

According to MLB.com?s Anthony Odoardi, manager Mike Scioscia said Saturday that Pujols ?will not be starting for the rest of the Angels? three-game set against the Tigers,? which concludes this afternoon.

The Angels have a scheduled day off Monday before beginning a series on Tuesday night against the Red Sox. Pujols may be ready for the opener of that three-game set, but even that is no guarantee. ?The thing about what he?s dealing with,? Scoisca told reporters, ?is it?s not like your shoulder?s stiff or your neck is tight and you want to get a blow.?

Pujols, 32, is batting .283/.344/.533 with 28 homers, 34 doubles and 86 RBI in 121 games this season.

India win U-19 World Cup as Chand-Patel overpower Australia (Lead)

Townsville (Australia), Aug 26

Skipper Unmukt Chand scored a spectacular hundred to help India upstage defending champions Australia by six wickets and win the Under-19 World Cup here Sunday.

Chand (111 not out) and Smit Patel (62 not out) anchored India's remarkable fightback, conjuring up an unbeaten 130-run stand for the fifth wicket to chase down a competitive 225 at the Tony Ireland Stadium. Chand saved the best for the last and enthralled the sizeable Indian supporters by smashing seven fours and as many sixes with some breathtaking stroke-play.

Patel hit a four over mid-wicket for the winning runs and ran hysterically towards his teammate for the victory celebration.

This is the third World Cup triumph for the Indian colts after 2000 and 2008 edition. This time, they overcame a team that entered the title clash unbeaten and which had not lost a final. They won the World Cup thrice.

The fact that Indian played all their matches at this picturesque venue helped them against the hosts and the presence of a fair sprinkling of vociferous expats to support them made them feel at home.

"I do not know what is happening right now. The win has not yet sunk in. The Aussies played very well but we came on top. Townsville has been amazing for us. I would like to thank the support staff, my team, we had a great time together, it is a very emotional moment," said man of the match Chand at the post-match presentation.

Patel joined Chand at a precarious moment with India 97 for four at the half-way stage, to be precise 24.2 overs, needing another 129 runs. It seemed a big ask against an Australian attack that had the upper hand.

But the talented Chand-Patel duo held their nerves and batted sensibly to first dig in and then overpower their formidable opponents. The highlight of their stand was the way they rotated the strike, complimenting each other with a boundary every now and then to make sure the asking rate is within reach.

Luck was also on India' side as Chand was dropped twice while Patel was lucky once. The skipper got the first lifeline in the 19th over when wicketkeeper Jimmye Peirson could not hold on to a regulation catch off fast bowler Gurinder Sandhu.

Chand's next let off came at a much more important time, he was on 84 and the team still required 49 off 42 balls. The Delhi player chipped one to mid-wicket off Alex Gregory and opposition captain William Bosisto could not fasten on to a straight-forward catch.

Chand cut loose thereafter, hitting Gregory for a straight six to enter the nineties and another one over the cover in his next over to bring up a remarkable century. There was no stopping the Indians from there on.

India faltered in the middle overs after the sizzling start provided by Chand and Baba Aparajith (33), who took the team to 60 for one in the first 10 overs. The run chase slowed down considerably when Aparajith was caught at cover off Sandhu in the 15th over.

Earlier, Australia did well to get to 225 for eight after losing the first four wickets for 38 runs. Bosisto (87 not out) played a captain's knock to bail the team out of trouble and got good support from Travis Head (37) and Ashton Turner (43).

India medium pacer Sandeep Sharma did the maximum damage, taking four wickets for 54 runs.

Unraveling intricate interactions, one molecule at a time

ScienceDaily (Aug. 12, 2012) ? A team of researchers at Columbia Engineering, led by Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics Associate Professor Latha Venkataraman and in collaboration with Mark Hybertsen from the Center for Functional Nanomaterials at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, has succeeded in performing the first quantitative characterization of van der Waals interactions at metal/organic interfaces at the single-molecule level.

In a study published online August 12 in the Advance Online Publication on Nature Materials's website , the team has shown the existence of two distinct binding regimes in gold-molecule-gold single-molecule junctions, using molecules containing nitrogen atoms at their extremities that are attracted to gold surfaces. While one binding mechanism is characterized by chemical interactions between the specific nitrogen and gold atoms, the other is dominated by van der Waals interactions between the molecule and the gold surface.

"A detailed understanding of van der Waals interactions is a key step towards design of organic electronic devices," says Sriharsha Aradhya, the study's lead author and a Ph.D. candidate working with Venkataraman. "Apart from the fundamental importance of these measurements, we are also excited about its applications. Understanding the effects of van der Waals interactions is tremendously important for creating and optimizing devices with organic building-blocks."

"Many proposals for future photovoltaic and flexible electronic devices are based on organic molecules because they are cost-effective," Venkataraman adds, "and scientists need to have a deeper understanding of these van der Waals interactions. Our work opens up the possibility of measuring and characterizing the strength of interaction between a variety of molecules and metallic surfaces a single-molecule at a time."

The forces of attraction between atoms and molecules come in different varieties and strengths, Aradhya explains. One of the most ubiquitous forms of attraction in nature is the van der Waals force. In contrast to specific interactions arising from bonding between atoms, van der Waals interactions represent non-specific interactions with subtler underpinnings. While originally intended to explain the apparent continuity between gaseous and liquid phases of matter, these forces have come to be recognized as an important aspect in answering such diverse questions as how does water boil inside a pressure cooker? How are geckos able to climb walls vertically? Or how can you control the organization of molecules for an organic LED smartphone display screen?

As devices like the latter become increasingly common, there has been a good deal of renewed interest in van der Waals interactions, known to lie at the heart of the structure and functionality in such devices. These interactions between organic molecules and metallic surfaces are central to a diverse range of phenomena such as catalysis of reactions, molecular electronic architectures, and molecular self-assembly in nature and engineered material. However, van der Waals interactions remain challenging to characterize directly at the fundamental, single-molecule level both in experiments and in theoretical calculations.

For this Columbia Engineering study, the researchers used their custom-built conducting atomic force microscope to make simultaneous measurements of force and conductance in single-molecule junctions. They combined their measurements with theoretical calculations and simulations, carried out in collaboration with Hybertsen at Brookhaven, in order to provide a unique quantitative measurement of the relative importance of specific and non-specific interactions at the single-molecule level, in a regime where both are comparable.

"In simple terms, conductance of the junction acts as a fingerprint of the structure," explains Aradhya. "At the same time, the measured force -- especially the force needed to rupture the junction -- can be used to deduce its mechanical properties."

While similar studies have been reported by a few research groups around the world, such precise studies have typically required the measurements to be carried out at very low temperatures and in high vacuum. Venkataraman's and Aradhya's experimental setup was optimized for very high sensitivities even at room temperature and ambient conditions. This allowed the team to perform thousands of individual single-molecule measurements, resulting in statistically robust results. The researchers then performed extensive density functional theory calculations to help them understand the mechanisms underlying their measurements.

"Taken together, this unique combination of our state-of-the-art experimental and theoretical efforts has resulted in this major progress in quantifying van der Waals interactions," Venkataraman says.

Future research, she adds, will include trying to control the interplay of van der Waals non-specific interactions with chemical modifications, in order to "achieve interesting functionality at the single-molecule level, which is an active area of research in our lab."

"We're very excited about this," she says, "as our efforts towards developing a reliable way to simultaneously measure force and conductance are yielding exciting new opportunities to relate structure, mechanics, and electronics at the single-molecule level."

As Hybertsen notes, "The development and validation of efficient theoretical models for the van der Waals interaction is still in its nascent stage. We expect that our work will also have an impact on this theoretical effort underway among many research groups around the globe to develop accurate treatment of van der Waals interactions."

The experiments were conceived by Aradhya and Venkataraman. The experimental tools and large dataset analysis techniques necessary for this study were developed by Aradhya, along with Michael Frei, a recent graduate of Venkataraman's lab. The modeling of the interactions and the calculations were conceived and executed by Hybertsen at Brookhaven.

We heard late last month that the John Carmack-endorsed Oculus Rift VR headset would be hitting Kickstarter any day now, and it turns out today is that day. The project has just launched on the crowd-funding site with a goal of $250,000. To reach that, the team (led by company founder Palmer Lucky) is offering a variety pledge options, starting with posters and t-shirts for $15 and $25 (or $10 for a simple thanks), and of course the headset itself that is initially only being offered as a developer kit. It will set you back $300, which also includes a copy of Doom 3 BFG, and is expected to start shipping in December (signed kits and a complete bundle are available as well). Those that act fast can also snag one of 100 unassembled prototype kits, which run $275 and ship a month earlier in November. Despite that developer-only status, though, the project is already off to an impressive start -- it's raised over $50,000 as of this writing. You can find the usual video overview of the project after the break.

Update: The 100 prototype kits are now sold out, and the project itself has already sailed past the $100,000 $150,000 mark. John Carmack also clarified on Twitter that he's not "backing" the project in any official capacity, only endorsing it as a "wonderful advancement in VR tech."

Update 2: And the project now easily met its goal on the first day. Those interested are still able to make a pledge any time over the next 30 days.
