IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipes and the Evolution of India Pale Ale

In Poland, they pronounce it eye-pa, as in ?I brewed an American eye-pa.?

In Spain, it?s ee-pa.

The initials for the style otherwise known as India pale ale have taken on an international life of their own. The full title of the newest book from Brewers Publications is IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipes and the Evolution of India Pale Ale, but look at the cover and repeat after author Mitch Steele: I-P-A.

Steele, whose day job is head brewer at Stone Brewing Co., spent more than three years working on the book. When he started IPA was the fourth best-selling craft beer style?now it?s number one. IPA sales in the U.S. increased 40 percent in 2011 and are on pace to grow that much again in 2012.

This book could hardly have arrived at a better time. Steele speaks to beer drinkers who want to know more about IPA, to homebrewers, and to commercial brewers alike. That?s because he?s all of those. In the introduction he confesses, ?I look back and realize I?ve become more of an IPA geek than I was.?

As a result, when he writes about the history of India pale ale in the first half of the book, he not only sets the story straight, but includes essential brewing details. And let?s be honest, American brewers are often guilty of repeating the myriad of myths about India pale ale. Because the book is so rich in information, breweries may even end up correcting the errors in history on their bottle labels and elsewhere.

It?s an un-rushed history, illustrated throughout with vintage drawings and photos. He also takes time to digress, for instance telling the story of how the Cascade hop quite nearly did not make it from breeding plots to farmers? fields, the rhetorical question being what that would have meant for the future of American hop-centric ales.

* Stan Hieronymus has more to share in the History of Beer section.

Conversely, the closing chapters are thick with information about ingredients and process, making it clear this is a brewing book. Nonetheless, it is presented in a way that an enthusiast who won?t bookmark page after page and otherwise ?geek out? over forty-eight recipes will gain a full appreciation of why Fuller?s 1897 IPA and Fathead?s Headhunter IPA taste so different.

In the course of his research Steele accumulated page after page of data, both old (analysis of various IPAs from the 1800s and first half of the twentieth century) and new (analysis of various craft-brewed IPAs by region, including IBUs for some of the biggest and baddest IPAs around).

He also identified the real story: ?IPA is a beer style that has gone through many drastic changes throughout its history,? he writes at the outset. ?There are at least three distinct versions of the beer.? Just as important, he has figured out how to tell that story. The only thing not clear is which shelf to put IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipes and the Evolution of India Pale Ale on. Does it go on the one with technical brewing journals or the one with beer history books? Maybe both.

Stan Hieronymus has traveled the United States many times over while writing about beer for numerous publications. He's author of seven books, including Brew Like a Monk and Brewing With Wheat.

Google Field Trip serves as virtual tour guide

3 hrs.

Google's new Field Trip app is a virtual local tour guide that's always running in the background. It pops up interesting local information???from local history and architecture to the best restaurants and shopping???without you having to ask for it.

After you choose whether you want just occasional notifications or frequent ones, Field Trip runs quietly in the background, looking for anything notable around you. The app pulls in information from a ton of sources, including Zagat and Eater in the food and drinks category; Architizer for architecture; and The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations and Atlas Obscura for unique (and possibly bizarre) finds.

When it finds something, Field Trip notifies you with a ringtone and/or vibration. It can even read the title and description to you. View the event, place, or thing on a map and read more about it within the app. You can also choose to get more or fewer notifications from individual sources.

The Android?app has a really pleasant interface and definitely encourages you to step out and go explore (as the video above suggests). Google says the app is like having a local friend with you as you explore a city. You can download this virtual friend on Google Play now; an iOS version is coming soon.?

NOTE:?If Google Play?says?your phone is incompatible, it might not really be. I got the incompatibility warning too on my Galaxy S2, but was able to download it directly from the phone and it works!

At least 8 die in fire in Russian oil sludge firm

MOSCOW (Reuters) - At least eight workers died after fire broke out in an oil sludge-processing firm on Saturday in the West Siberian region of Khanty-Mansiisk, the hinterland of Russian crude production, the Emergencies Ministry said.

The fire at a sludge storage has been put out, the ministry said in a statement. The Investigation Committee said the cause of fire could be an explosion, while the state-owned RIA Novosti news agency said, citing a law-enforcement source, the plant caught fire after gas exploded.

The ministry said eight more people were injured after the fire was reported at 0950 Moscow time (0550 GMT) at the plant, owned by the private Invest-Oil company.

According to some estimates, more than 3 million tonnes of sludge is being generated in Russia as a result of oil and gas production and refining. (Reporting by Vladimir Soldatkin; editing by James Jukwey)

Wall Street eyes best third quarter since 2010

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street was set to finish its best third quarter since 2010 after a wave of central bank actions sparked a dramatic reversal in equity markets, but signs of weakness in the economy on Friday pushed stocks lower and raised questions about the rally.

The S&P 500 advanced 5.9 percent over the past three months were mainly due to expectations central banks would boost their economies. That brings the benchmark index's yearly advance to 15 percent.

But on Friday investors grappled with disappointing U.S. economic data. The Institute for Supply Management-Chicago's index of Midwest business activity showed contraction for the first time since 2009, falling to 49.7 in September from 53.0 in August.

The data follows other weak regional manufacturing reports and a sharp drop in durable goods orders last month.

"The reality is that the fundamentals of the market certainly don't support a 17-plus percent run up year-to-date, but with all the QE (quantitative easing) action, that has had a huge, huge impact," said Oliver Pursche, president at Gary Goldberg Financial Services in Suffern, New York.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> dropped 33.98 points, or 0.25 percent, to 13,451.99. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> fell 4.07 points, or 0.28 percent, to 1,443.08. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> lost 13.00 points, or 0.41 percent, to 3,123.60.

However, stocks were off their lows of the day after Spanish bank stress tests were mostly within expectations. The independent audit showed banks will need 59.3 billion euros ($76.3 billion) in extra capital to ride out a serious downturn.

Meanwhile, Moody's review of Spain's credit rating, due later in the day, could add to its challenges.

The final reading on the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan survey on consumer sentiment was also less than expected, though it advanced to its highest in four months.

U.S. consumer spending rose in August by the most in six months as households stretched to pay for higher gasoline prices, according to a Commerce Department report.

Recent protests in Greece and Spain against austerity plans have also heightened investors' concerns as the turmoil could impede political maneuvering.

Trading was light on the quarter's last day when money managers reposition their portfolios.

Reflecting the defensive tone, nine of the 10 S&P sectors fell. Only the S&P utilities index <.gspu> was positive, up just 0.4 percent.

The decline in the S&P technology sector index <.gspt> was limited, as Accenture PLC climbed 7.6 percent to $70.39. Accenture's gain followed its forecast of full-year earnings higher than analysts' estimates as the company bolsters its outsourcing business.

Elsewhere in the tech arena, U.S.-listed shares of Research in Motion jumped 6.3 percent to $7.60 a day after a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss.

Nike Inc warned of slowing orders in China, becoming the latest company to sound a note of caution about how economic weakness in the world's second-largest economy was affecting its business. Nike's stock fell 0.5 percent to $95.55.

The S&P 500 is down 1.2 percent this week so far, putting the index on track for its second consecutive weekly decline and worst weekly percentage drop since early June as markets have struggled to maintain upward movement after the Fed's latest stimulus plan announced on September 13.

Canadian GM workers accept contract

(AP) ? Canadian auto workers at GM have voted to accept the new contract that their union leadership negotiated last week, the union said Thursday.

The Canadian Auto Workers union said 73 percent of its GM members accepted the four-year deal. The union said about half of the 5,500 workers at GM Canada cast ballots.

The union leadership also reached an agreement with Ford last week and Chrysler this week. Ford workers voted in favor of their deal last weekend and Chrysler workers are set to vote on their tentative agreement this weekend.

GM and Chrysler matched the deal the union reached with Ford.

The contracts cut wages for new hires and freeze pay for current workers. But the contracts also give them lump-sum payments to cover inflation and for ratifying the deal.

The deals with the three Detroit automakers avoided strikes and the possibility production will move to the United States in the next four years.

David Wenner, a General Director at GM, said Thursday they would work with the union over the next four years to enhance the competitiveness of the Canadian operations.

The auto companies had said Canada was the most expensive place in the world to make cars and trucks, and warned they could move production south if the CAW didn't cut costs. The CAW represents about 21,000 auto workers in Canada and about 16 percent of auto production in North America.

Canada's advantages in the past ? a weak Canadian dollar and government health care ? have all but vanished compared with U.S. factories.

Under the agreement new workers will receive 60 percent of the current top wage of $33.89 Canadian dollars (US$34.74). That would mean new workers would be paid around CA$20.33 ($20.84). They can move up the wage scale and reach the top wage in 10 years.

U.S. workers at the Detroit automakers approved a similar two-tier wage agreement five years ago, but in those agreements, workers don't automatically get the top wage after 10 years.

In addition, the United Auto Workers union in the U.S. has agreed to steeper concessions than the CAW, making U.S. labor costs cheaper. Going into the talks, the Detroit automakers were paying an estimated $60 to $62 an hour for labor and benefits in Canada, compared with $50 an hour at Chrysler, $56 at Ford and $58 at GM, according to the Center for Automotive Research, a nonprofit research group.

The federal Canadian and Ontario province governments worked in tandem with the U.S. government on auto bailouts in 2009 to maintain Canada's share of North American auto production. Canada's share peaked at 3.2 million cars in 1999, about 17.4 percent of North American production. In 2011, Canada produced 2.1 million vehicles, or about 16 percent.

Bioengineers introduce 'Bi-Fi' -- The biological 'Internet'

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? If you were a bacterium, the virus M13 might seem innocuous enough. It insinuates more than it invades, setting up shop like a freeloading houseguest, not a killer. Once inside it makes itself at home, eating your food, texting indiscriminately. Recently, however, bioengineers at Stanford University have given M13 a bit of a makeover.

The researchers, Monica Ortiz, a doctoral candidate in bioengineering, and Drew Endy, PhD, an assistant professor of bioengineering, have parasitized the parasite and harnessed M13's key attributes -- its non-lethality and its ability to package and broadcast arbitrary DNA strands -- to create what might be termed the biological Internet, or "Bi-Fi." Their findings were published online Sept. 7 in the Journal of Biological Engineering.

Using the virus, Ortiz and Endy have created a biological mechanism to send genetic messages from cell to cell. The system greatly increases the complexity and amount of data that can be communicated between cells and could lead to greater control of biological functions within cell communities. The advance could prove a boon to bioengineers looking to create complex, multicellular communities that work in concert to accomplish important biological functions.

Medium and message

M13 is a packager of genetic messages. It reproduces within its host, taking strands of DNA -- strands that engineers can control -- wrapping them up one by one and sending them out encapsulated within proteins produced by M13 that can infect other cells. Once inside the new hosts, they release the packaged DNA message.

The M13-based system is essentially a communication channel. It acts like a wireless Internet connection that enables cells to send or receive messages, but it does not care what secrets the transmitted messages contain.

"Effectively, we've separated the message from the channel. We can now send any DNA message we want to specific cells within a complex microbial community," said Ortiz, the first author of the study.

It is well-known that cells naturally use various mechanisms, including chemicals, to communicate, but such messaging can be extremely limited in both complexity and bandwidth. Simple chemical signals are typically both message and messenger -- two functions that cannot be separated.

"If your network connection is based on sugar then your messages are limited to 'more sugar,' 'less sugar,' or 'no sugar'" explained Endy.

Cells engineered with M13 can be programmed to communicate in much more complex, powerful ways than ever before. The possible messages are limited only by what can be encoded in DNA and thus can include any sort of genetic instruction: start growing, stop growing, come closer, swim away, produce insulin and so forth.

Rates and ranges

In harnessing DNA for cell-cell messaging the researchers have also greatly increased the amount of data they can transmit at any one time. In digital terms, they have increased the bit rate of their system. The largest DNA strand M13 is known to have packaged includes more than 40,000 base pairs. Base pairs, like 1s and 0s in digital encoding, are the basic building blocks of genetic data. Most genetic messages of interest in bioengineering range from several hundred to many thousand base pairs.

Ortiz was even able to broadcast her genetic messages between cells separated by a gelatinous medium at a distance of greater than 7 centimeters.

"That's very long-range communication, cellularly speaking," she said.

Down the road, the biological Internet could lead to biosynthetic factories in which huge masses of microbes collaborate to make more complicated fuels, pharmaceuticals and other useful chemicals. With improvements, the engineers say, their cell-cell communication platform might someday allow more complex three-dimensional programming of cellular systems, including the regeneration of tissue or organs.

"The ability to communicate 'arbitrary' messages is a fundamental leap -- from just a signal-and-response relationship to a true language of interaction," said Radhika Nagpal, professor of computer science at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, who was not involved in the research. "Orchestrating the cooperation of cells to form artificial tissues, or even artificial organisms is just one possibility. This opens a door to new biological systems and solving problems that have no direct analog in nature."

Ortiz added: "The biological Internet is in its very earliest stages. When the information Internet was first introduced in the 1970s, it would have been hard to imagine the myriad uses it sees today, so there's no telling all the places this new work might lead."

Improve Your Self Improvement With This Advice | Medical Schools ...

Self improvement is an important part of being the best that you can be. This ranges from improving your spending habits all the way to living a healthier lifestyle. You need to work on and develop yourself. Your self improvement is a never ending journey. Good habits will enhance your overall health and happiness in life.

Instead of boasting about trophies, awards, and medals, try asking others about their achievements. Placing your focus on others will help you recognize the potential of those around you.

Weight loss should not be the only reason to exercise. There are many physical reasons for the need to exercise. Because physical activity stimulates production of feel-good chemicals in the body, a workout program may actually make you feel calmer and more positive.

Everyone screws up sometime and does something they should not. Unchecked stress can be very damaging to both your mind and your body. Make an honest effort to live life to the fullest without sweating the small stuff.

Do you drink a lot? The harmful ingredients in cigarettes can cause COPD, cancer and a huge list of other diseases. Your body is sacred, and you have to learn to respect it. You can improve your life by replacing bad habits with good ones. Take an honest inventory of your life to see where you can make improvements.

As you begin your personal development journey, accept that fact that you truly do deserve the best of everything! You need to be aware that you owe that to yourself. At the end of the day, you can feel satisfied that you have given it your all, and you will have nothing to regret.

Figure out what is really important to you and focus on those things in your life. When it comes to focusing your feelings and emotions, strive to apply them to the important aspects of your life that build happiness, and do not waste them on the negative aspects that weigh you down and prevent inner peace.

Use other successful individuals as role models and look for ways to replicate their methods. Pick two or three simple habits and focus on them until they are second nature. Experts suggest that it takes three weeks to form a new habit, so persevere and you will change your ways.

Try to get the most out of your work time to get more accomplished. The simple trick is to take more breaks when you work. Although this may not seem to make sense, frequent breaks can give you time to relax and get re-energized, so that you will be more focused when you return to your work.

Focus on improving yourself first; you deserve to be happy! You should not be selfish and only do what you want with no regards to others, though you do need to take full responsibility for your happiness. They key is to stay true to your beliefs, and then you can have a much greater chance at happiness in your personal development.

Treat yourself right by respecting your body. When your body communicates a need such as hunger, pain or thirst, it is important that you address it as soon as possible. By doing that, your body will perform better later on in the future. Lapsing into poor health by not meeting your body?s needs can have repercussions.

Search for the texts and literature that encourage and inspire you. Such texts might include religious scripture, inspirational books, poetry and other forms of writing. By keeping something around that you can refer to for encouragement, you will be better able to handle all that life throws at you.

You need to know what your beliefs are in order to make a self improvement plan. It wouldn?t make sense to work on areas in your life that contradict your values. So instead, you should spend your efforts on things in your life that match up with your values. This will help you make significant changes to your life, both at home and at work.

Hang out with people who are similar to you. This will help to boost your self-esteem as well as give you a bit of a break from the kind of people that spend their time badmouthing your dreams and goals every chance that they get.

There?s an idea of the ?Law of Threes,? which means that anything, good or bad, that you do to other people will return to you threefold. For this reason, it is important to wish only positive things for the people in your life. Negative feelings will be less burdensome and less depressing if you make it a practice to maintain a positive mood.

Know the obstacles you face before you hit them. Doing this is extremely hard for a lot of people. Identifying and acknowledging your weakest points is a crucial element in transforming them. When you are able to get rid of obstacles, then your path to a successful future becomes easier to navigate.

Go out of your way to give other people compliments. By being kind to others, you will also begin to care about yourself more.

Have a humble perspective. Humans are just a very small bit of the universe. We can all learn from other people, and no single person knows all. Understand this and open yourself up to new opportunities. If you?re open-minded, you?ll begin learning more from people.

Pick a single key aspect of your life that needs changing, and work on it. While you may want to change a number of things about yourself, by focusing on improving one thing at a time, there?s a better chance of you being successful. This means you will be able to maintain the changes as you turn them into habits as habits take time to stick.

Your body and mind run together in perfect harmony, so it stands to reason that the healthiness of one will impact on the healthiness of the other. Exercise regularly and eat a delicious and healthy diet of nutritious foods. Keep in mind that a healthy body and mind go well together.

Your personal goals should be concrete and specific. If there are specific goals present, it will be easier to figure out the path that you should take to meet them. You?ll more easily handle difficult things that come your way, and help you successfully reach your goals faster.

People who are looking for personal development methods often make the mistake of setting goals that are too vague or too hard to target. Setting smaller, easily attainable goals prevents you from becoming discouraged. If you create a clear goal, you will achieve the results you want.

Be realistic and smart about everything you face in life. Learn from situations you encounter every day, and make sure that you recognize what you cannot change about circumstances in your life. Modesty will help you work within your limits. Wisdom allows you to make better future choices based on past experiences.

You can learn how to approach tough situations in your life without losing your cool. If you can remain calm during stressful situations, you will feel confident enough to face anything. Take time each day to just breathe.

Speaking to a pastor or a professional counselor can be very rewarding. These individuals are trained to listen to your problems and are highly skilled. Professionals will be able to help you consider all your options and give you more information about available resources. Sharing your issues with such an adviser can result in a greater sense of peace and wisdom.

If you suffer from anxiety, try going to see a movie with a friend. Movies are social settings, but they do not require conversation or uncomfortable socialization. You can use the trip as an opportunity to become accustomed to the company of others.

It may become discouraging to begin developing better personal habits and lifestyles, but once you start noticing your life developing towards a better future, you will never want to stop. You can always develop better ways to do things and it?s important to always try hard towards any personal development goals you have

Try challenging yourself as much as possible. This can create new possibilities in your life. Think about learning something or acquiring new skills. You may even start a new model by doing something that has never been done before. Don?t just copy what others have done, find something original.

PFT: Bush has no sympathy for Revis

Packers Seahawks FootballAP

The good news in the wake of last night?s very bad news at the end of the Packers-Seahawks game is that the NFL and the locked-out officials spent a fourth straight day negotiating on Tuesday.

The bad news in the wake of last night?s very bad news at the end of the Packers-Seahawks game is that the NFL doesn?t seem to recognize that it has gambled with the use of replacement officials ? and it has lost.

Per multiple reports (including one from Peter King of SI.com and one from Nancy Gay of FOXSports.com), the NFL has opted to stand firm on certain key issues.

First, the NFL wants a bench of replacements (they?ll need a better word than that) to serve as in-season understudies for officials who aren?t performing at an acceptable level.? King reports that the NFL won?t guarantee that the officials will work at least 15 games.

Second, the pension issue continues to prevent an agreement.? The league wants to change from a defined-benefit pension plan to a defined-contribution system.? The difference, per King, is roughly $3.3 million per year.? The officials don?t believe they should have to tighten belts at a time when the NFL continues to grow fat.

Third, the amount of the raise for the officials remains in dispute.? The officials want an eight-percent bump.? The NFL has offered an increase of 2.5 percent.? Again, the discrepancy comes from the fact that the officials believe that, as the league?s pie grows, their slice of it grows commensurately.

The NFL remains stubborn, oblivious (at least externally) to the fact that the performance of the replacement officials underscores the value of the regular officials, who operate far more efficiently and reliably in the crucible of 60,000 fans and foul-mouthed coaches and big, strong, fast players and millions of eyeballs.? The performance of the replacements demonstrates the value of the regulars, and yet the league refuses to relent.

As King explains it, the league wants to ?wrest back control of the officials? performance week to week in an NFL season.?? But the ritual of collective bargaining requires a party that wants something to give something.? It seems like the NFL wants plenty, and that the NFL likewise isn?t willing to bend.

Sure, a raise has been offered.? Why shouldn?t it be?? Everybody connected to the NFL is making more and more money.? The officials should get more and more, too, especially if the NFL wants to emerge from the talks with new powers.

When it comes to the power the NFL has amassed over player discipline, the league is quick to point out that the NFLPA has sacrificed those rights through collective bargaining.? Regardless of whether it makes sense for the league to have a bench of officials, the NFL has in past negotiations allowed the current system to emerge.? To change it, the NFL must make real concessions.

But the NFL doesn?t want to make real concessions.? The NFL never wants to make real concessions.? That?s fine, but the NFL can?t then pretend that everything is fine.

As King writes, ?Ihe NFL is willing to look at the dispute as something like a game of chess vs. a game of checkers.? The league believes that the short-term pain of a football nation up in arms will be worth it two to four years down the road if they can improve the overall quality of officiating by adding what would be a taxi squad of three additional crews.?

Or the NFL can acquire that right by paying for it.? Instead, the NFL is willing to alienate fans, anger players, and tarnish ?the shield? in order to get its way, hoping that half of the locked-out officials plus one eventually will vote to take the deal.

The NFL is taking us all for granted.? In the end, there?s a good chance the NFL is guessing right.? But that doesn?t make it right.

YouTube for Android update brings preloading to Froyo and Gingerbread, YouTube TV queuing

YouTube's Android app brings preloading to Froyo and Gingerbread, YouTube TV queuing

Just because your Android hardware hasn't been upgraded to the most recent (or, next to the most recent) version of the OS doesn't mean you have to miss new features. Google has shipped a new version of its YouTube app that brings the preloading feature we saw arrive on ICS and above devices back in June to Gingerbread and Froyo. You'll still have to be online to watch preloaded videos from your subscriptions or watch later list, but they precache while you're on WiFi and plugged in so you don't have to wait through buffering to show someone Gangnam Style at the bus stop. Otherwise, the initial Watch page has changed slightly, there are more channels in the Channel Store and you can also queue up videos to play later on any YouTube-enabled TV device you've paired with your mobile.

Weeks before election, Pennsylvania voter ID law back in court

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - A judge who will decide whether Pennsylvania's new voter-identification law should be blocked heard testimony on Tuesday from one witness who said fears that the measure placed an unfair burden on residents were overblown.

The witness, Kurt Myers, a deputy secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, said about 11,000 voters have gotten the mandated ID cards at the center of the controversial law and thousands more were set to get theirs before the November 6 election.

"We're in the business of issuing IDs, not denying IDs," Myers told Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson.

Simpson, who upheld the law in August, called the hearing on orders by the state's highest court to reconsider his ruling. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court last week told him to decide by October 2 whether voters have "liberal access" to the mandated IDs, and if they don't, to block the law before the November election.

National attention is focused on the court battle over the law passed in March by the Republican-led Legislature without a single Democratic vote, as similar fights over potential voter disenfranchisement by ID laws are waged in Texas and South Carolina.

A flashpoint is the law's effect on voter turnout in Pennsylvania, a key swing state in the tight presidential race just six weeks away.

Critics say it is designed to keep minority voters, who typically vote Democratic, away from the polls. Supporters of the voter ID law say it is aimed at ensuring that only those legally eligible to vote cast ballots.

The law says that all voters must show either a state driver's license, government employee ID or a state non-driver ID card to vote.

Myers said his agency, known as PennDOT, has been doing everything it can to get voter IDs to those who want them. While challengers argue otherwise, Myers maintained there will not be a large, last-minute push by voters to get allowable IDs.

"The data doesn't support that there are thousands and thousands of people out there without (a) voter ID," he said.

Simpson, who has until October 2 to issue his ruling, was expected to continue hearing testimony on Thursday and indicated he will rule shortly after that.

"I am not of the mind to wait until the last minute. The sooner the better," Simpson said. (Writing by Barbara Goldberg; editing by Philip Barbara)

The Government Doesn't Regulate Use Of Antibiotics In American ...

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?Although antibiotic use in humans is closely monitored by our nation's health care system, there is no equivalent monitoring for animals as detailed in an article in the September issue of Food Nutrition & Science (FNS).

The article features a debate between Dr. Randall Singer, associate professor of Epidemiology at The University of Minnesota, and Dr. Meghan F. Davis, postdoctoral fellow with the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Earlier this year, a federal judge ordered the FDA to reconsider two petitions seeking restrictions on the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture. The order comes amidst longstanding concerns about usage trends for antibiotics in animal agriculture and how those trends relate to antimicrobial resistance in both animals and humans.

"This debate is crucial not only to the safety of our food supply, but to the better understanding of how it affects human health," says Phil Lempert, founder of Food Nutrition & Science and CEO of The Lempert Report and SupermarketGuru.com. "Regardless, we need a better system to monitor our food chain to ensure safety for both animals and humans."

Also in this month's issue, results from a recent study from The University of Minnesota that suggest access to fruits and vegetables during adolescence and emerging adulthood influence consumption in young adulthood (19 to 30 years old).

In addition, FNS celebrates World Pasta Day taking place on October 25, 2012. This annual event, now in its 17th year, was created to commemorate the delicious, nutritious and versatile role pasta plays in a healthy lifestyle.

According to Lempert, "This is the perfect time for retailers to educate their customers about this delicious staple, providing recipe ideas, product samples/tastes, suggesting new pasta 'pairings' and more."

David Lindsay: Bringing It Home

Simon Hughes makes a good case, but his party is past help. Let us see what succeeds it. In his case, what is he doing to influence that succession?

There must be a tax on the productive value of land per acre, other than that occupied by the homes of the less well off, perhaps making possible the abolition of stamp duty, and in any event establishing and enforcing the principle that no one should own land other than in order to make use of it; this was proposed by Andy Burnham, increasingly a man to watch, when he was a candidate for Leader of the Labour Party.

There must also be a statutory requirement of planning permission for change of use if it is proposed to turn a primary dwelling into a secondary dwelling, a working family home into a weekend or holiday home.

The Lib Dems are not going to either of those things. Ed Miliband, over to you.

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is no ordinary archeologist. When we first see him, he is somewhere in the Peruvian jungle in 1936, running a booby-trapped gauntlet (complete with an over-sized rolling boulder) to fetch a solid-gold idol. He loses this artifact to his chief rival, a French archeologist named Belloq (Paul Freeman), who then prepares to kill our hero. In the first of many serial-like escapes, Indy eludes Belloq by hopping into a convenient plane. So, then: is Indiana Jones afraid of anything? Yes, snakes. The next time we see Jones, he's a soft-spoken, bespectacled professor. He is then summoned from his ivy-covered environs by Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) to find the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. The Nazis, it seems, are already searching for the Ark, which the mystical-minded Hitler hopes to use to make his stormtroopers invincible. But to find the Ark, Indy must first secure a medallion kept under the protection of Indy's old friend Abner Ravenwood, whose daughter, Marion (Karen Allen), evidently has a "history" with Jones. Whatever their personal differences, Indy and Marion become partners in one action-packed adventure after another, ranging from wandering the snake pits of the Well of Souls to surviving the pyrotechnic unearthing of the sacred Ark. A joint project of Hollywood prodigies George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, with a script co-written by Lawrence Kasdan and Philip Kaufman, among others, Raiders of the Lost Ark is not so much a movie as a 115-minute thrill ride. Costing 22 million dollars (nearly three times the original estimate), Raiders of the Lost Ark reaped 200 million dollars during its first run. It was followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1985) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), as well as a short-lived TV-series "prequel." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Stop Wasting Your Time Reporting. Start Doing!

Here?s a letter to the?New York Times:

Using lots of ink to argue that the Internet wastes lots of energy, James Glanz manages only to demonstrate confusion over the difference between ?use? and ?waste? (?Power, Pollution and the Internet,? Sept. 23).? Intense amounts of the former do not imply the existence of the latter.

Consider, for example, Mr. Glanz?s claim that ?Online companies typically run their facilities at maximum capacity around the clock, whatever the demand?.? The inefficient use of power is largely driven by a symbiotic relationship between users who demand an instantaneous response to the click of a mouse and companies that put their business at risk if they fail to meet that expectation.?

True.? But if enough consumers ?demand an instantaneous response to the click of mouse,? energy used by online companies to keep servers running at peak capacity isn?t wasted; it is, instead, used to satisfy consumers? demand for 24/7/365 fast Internet service ? demand that is high yet unpredictable from minute-to-minute.

Anyone who still feels that online companies waste energy can make a mint by launching his or her own online company that uses electricity far more sparingly than do existing companies.? If Mr. Glanz?s presumption is correct, consumers will eagerly buy slower and less-reliable Internet service if it is sold at lower prices that reflect its less-wasteful use of energy.

Sincerely,
Donald J. Boudreaux
Professor of Economics
George Mason University
Fairfax, VA? 22030

A further point: Should we conclude that the?ink and wood pulp used by the NYT?to print this long report for its many subscribers who don?t read this report were ?wasted?? ?Is it the case that a non-wasteful NYT would print and deliver this report only to those subscribers that it knows will read it? ?Should we discover (as we undoubtedly would) that tens of thousands of copies of today?s?NYT were printed, delivered, and sold to subscribers who never read Glanz?s report, do we conclude that the?NYT?needs a new and less-wasteful business model?

Lithuania might ban energy drink advertising - The Baltic Times

Sep 20, 2012

VILNIUS ? Lithuanian government is pushing a ban on energy drink advertising in youth events and youth publications and limit advertising in other sorts of publications. However, the government does not intend to ban marketing energy drinks.

"We will be looking for some other solutions," Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius told reporters, when asked why the government was not going to ban selling such drinks to young people, writes LETA/ELTA.

PM said that it will be looked at how other countries resolve such issues.

Justice Minister Remigijus Simasius says that discussions on advertising ban are good in themselves because this, according to him, would make at least some teenagers think twice before consuming energy drinks.

However, the minister urges not to forget what problems could crop up along with a marketing ban. "We should not be looking at the ban through rose-colored glasses. The ban could bring some definite financial outcomes," he said on Wednesday.

Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart: When Does It - Dr. Jane Greer

Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart: When Does It Make Sense To Forgive Someone?

When Kristen Stewart admitted to cheating on boyfriend and Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, it was all over the news. So it was surprising to see the other day that the talk about Robert?s forgiving Kristen was tucked away in the New York Post, where it could easily have been missed. Since then, however, various magazines are, in fact, writing about their possible reuniting. Their situation raises several issues. The first is, given that the treacherous betrayal made the headlines repeatedly, it was interesting that the potential reconciliation was initially glossed over. Secondly, why is it that when women cheat, the impact of the story has a different tone, almost as though they are held to higher expectations, from when men cheat? And finally, and most importantly: When does it make sense to forgive someone?

We see it time and time again, but usually from the other side ? male celebrities and politicians having affairs. Not only do the women often decide to stand by their side and stay with them, but the public is generally willing to accept the apologies from the men and move on without it having to bring down their relationship or career. So why does it seem different when a woman cheats? They seem to take a harder hit. If people do forgive them, they certainly remember. Meg Ryan is still known for cheating on Russell Crowe. LeAnne Rimes is remembered for admitting to cheating on her then-husband Dean Sheremet. Their betrayals can resonate for years and can contaminate their careers. In the same way, Kristen Stewart?s actions may stick with her. Concern about movie sales dropping are focused on her behavior and what she did with Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders, not so much around what he did. It is as if the standards are separate, and women are still condemned with The Scarlet Letter.

In reality, there shouldn?t be any difference. No matter who is cheating, it is a scalding experience for anyone that sometimes can be forgiven and sometimes cannot. The options for men and women are the same. When all is said and done, the ability to forgive boils down to a few considerations. The first is how important is this person to you? How much shared history do you have together, how much joy do they bring to your life, and how strong is your chemistry? The second consideration is whether or not this has happened before. Is it the first time, and they are stepping up to the plate with a readiness to rebuild your trust and strengthen the relationship? Or has this happened in the past and, while they may have apologized, they never did the work to regain your trust?

If you?ve established your desire to rekindle your relationship, the ball falls back into your partner?s court. Are they putting their apology into action? Generally they have to be willing to apologize more than once, the rule of thumb being as often as you need to hear it. They have to be able to answer any questions you have about what happened. They have to be open about the details of their indiscretion so that you can make it real and attempt to no longer have it haunt you. They have to be willing to put you first and make time to be with you, hear your hurt, and respond to it.

On the flip side, if you feel all-consumed by your anger and are deeply wounded beyond healing, then forgiveness might not be an option. If, despite whatever good there was between you before this happened, you still don?t believe what they are telling you, are not willing to take a chance to see if they are true to their word, want to protect yourself from being hurt again or if they are out of chances, then it might be time to say goodbye. And if your partner?s promises are empty and they are not willing to do any of the heavy lifting in the construction of your new relationship, then there is nowhere to go but out.

Only time will tell which camp Kristen and Robert belong to. But, in the end, it should make no difference if the one doing the forgiving is male or female. What matters is if they are in it together.
