The NFL typically avoids anything any association with gambling, even though the league knows that plenty of people bet legally or otherwise on the outcome of games ? and that millions play fantasy football for money, which makes it gambling, too.

But even as the league sues New Jersey to prevent the expansion of gambling to include NFL games, the Redskins have publicly announced support for Question 7, a Maryland ballot measure that, if approved, will allow the construction of a casino.

?As members of the Prince George?s County business community, we see it as our obligation to speak out in support of major economic-development initiatives,? Redskins president of business operations Dennis Greene said, via the Washington Post.? ?We believe Question 7 represents a tremendous opportunity .?.?. to create thousands of good-paying jobs, increase funding for public schools, and help provide dollars for other critical state and local government services.?

The Redskins didn?t seek league approval before making their announcement, but NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said that approval wasn?t necessary.

?So long as a proposed casino would not include sports betting, there is nothing in our league guidelines that would prohibit a club from supporting this type of ballot referendum,? NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told the Post.

Still, the Redskins? reasoning could be applied to what New Jersey hopes to do by allowing gambling on NFL games.? Gambling expansion always is aimed at creating jobs and raising money.

So, at a minimum, the whole thing looks more than a little hypocritical.

Of course, that bridge already was crossed when the NFL approved the use of team names and logos for scratch-and-lose lottery tickets, a get-rich-quick scam that preys on those who need the extra few dollars the most.

Surprising black hole discovery changes picture of globular star clusters

ScienceDaily (Oct. 3, 2012) ? An unexpected discovery by an international team of astronomers is forcing scientists to rethink their understanding of the environment in globular star clusters, tight-knit collections containing hundreds of thousands of stars.

The astronomers, including Dr Tom Maccarone from the University of Southampton, used the National Science Foundation's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, USA to study a globular cluster called Messier 22 (M22), a group of stars more than 10,000 light-years from Earth. They hoped to find evidence of a rare type of black hole in the cluster's centre called an intermediate-mass black hole, which is more massive than those larger than the Sun's mass, but smaller than the supermassive black holes found at the cores of galaxies.

However, they found something very surprising -- two smaller black holes, which is unusual because most theorists say there should be at most one black hole in the cluster.

Dr Tom Maccarone, a reader in Astronomy at the University of Southampton, developed the methodology for the study and the surprising result ties in closely to previous research by Tom. He says:

"I had actually suggested several years ago that there were probably black holes lurking among the X-ray sources that had already been seen in globular clusters, and that the one way to pick the black holes sucking gas in, apart from other types of faint X-ray sources, would be to look for the radio emission, but I didn't expect that this particular cluster would be the best place to look. It was still incredibly exciting to see this result and I'm optimistic that we will find more of these objects in other clusters in the future."

Black holes, concentrations of mass so dense that not even light can escape them, are left over after very massive stars have exploded as supernovae. In a globular cluster, many of these stellar-mass black holes probably were produced early in the cluster's 12-billion-year history as massive stars rapidly passed through their life cycles.

Simulations have indicated that these black holes would fall toward the centre of the cluster and then begin a violent gravitational dance with each other, in which all of them, or perhaps all but a single one, would be thrown completely out of the cluster.

"There is supposed to be only one survivor possible," says Jay Strader of Michigan State University and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "Finding two black holes, instead of one, in this globular cluster definitely changes the picture," he says.

The astronomers suggest some possible explanations. First, the black holes themselves may gradually work to puff up the central parts of the cluster, reducing the density and thus the rate at which black holes eject each other through their gravitational dance. Alternatively, the cluster may not be as far along in the process of contracting as previously thought, again reducing the density of the core.

The two black holes discovered with the VLA were the first stellar-mass black holes to be found in any globular cluster in our own Milky Way galaxy, and also are the first found by radio, instead of X-ray, observations. Future VLA observations will help us learn about the ultimate fate of black holes in globular clusters.

Dr Tom Maccarone worked with Laura Chomiuk of Michigan State University and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory; Jay Strader of Michigan State University and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics; James Miller-Jones of Curtin University in Australia; and Anil Seth of the University of Utah. The scientists published their findings in the latest issue of the scientific journal Nature.

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 226,870 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the U.S. in 2012, including 4,490 Hoosier women. The American Cancer Society offers 24/7 support to those diagnosed with breast cancer and their loved ones. In fact, one out of every two women turn to the Society for help and support following their breast cancer diagnosis. This October, the Society will be using National Breast Cancer Awareness Month to remind women about the importance of breast health.

?The American Cancer Society encourages all women to put their health first. We want women to understand the benefits of eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly and limiting alcohol intake, and the effect those healthy habits can have on lowering their cancer risk,? said Vicki Elliff, Indiana health initiatives director at the American Cancer Society.

Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer death in women, second only to lung cancer. The Society is reminding women 40 and older to have a yearly mammogram and clinical breast exam. The American Cancer Society offers an Indiana Mammography Facility Guide that compares services, price, and other information to help Hoosier women choose the mammography facility best suited for them. The Indiana Mammography Facility Guide is available for free online at http://www.cancer.org/indianamammogram.?

Also, the Society recommends that women ages 20 to 39 receive a clinical breast exam at least once every three years. The five-year survival rate is 99% for breast cancer that is diagnosed in the earliest stages. ?More than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors will celebrate a birthday this year thanks to early detection and improved treatment,? The American Cancer Society is the most effective breast cancer-fighting organization in the world, and is doing the most to help people with breast cancer today and works tirelessly to find cures to end the disease tomorrow. The Society has spent more on breast cancer research than on any other cancer, and has played an important part in many major breast cancer research breakthroughs in the past century, including demonstrating that mammography is an effective screening test for breast cancer, the development of Tamoxifen and Herceptin, and knowledge that genetics, poor diet, lack of exercise, and moderate drinking increase a person?s cancer risk.

The Society also offers newly diagnosed women and those living with breast cancer a variety of programs and services to help them in their breast cancer experience.

? The Reach To Recovery program helps newly diagnosed patients cope with their breast cancer experience. Reach To Recovery volunteers offer the unique understanding, support, and hope from the perspective of someone who has survived breast cancer.

? The Look Good Feel Better program helps breast cancer patients manage the physical side effects of treatment. Patients gain beauty techniques to help improve their self-esteem and quality of life, but also a sense of support, confidence, courage and community with other cancer patients in the program.

? The Hope Lodge program offers patients and their caregivers free lodging for those receiving treatment far from home.

? The Society offers free information to help make treatment decisions and access to its programs 24/7 through 1-800-227-2345 or cancer.org.

The American Cancer Society?s affiliate advocacy organization, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action NetworkSM (ACS CAN), continues to fight back against breast cancer by working to increase funding for the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) that provides low-income, uninsured and underinsured women access to mammograms and Pap tests. Current funding only enables the program to serve less than one in five eligible women ages 40 to 64 nationwide. ACS CAN encourages anyone touched by this disease to let Congress know that support for the NBCCEDP is important and that an increase in funding for this program is vital to its continuation. Those interested in joining the fight against breast cancer in a meaningful way are invited to participate in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk events taking place throughout the state of Indiana during the month of October. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is an inspiring, noncompetitive, family friendly walk that honors breast cancer survivors, raises awareness about the disease, and helps to save lives. There isn?t a fee to participate, but most participants form teams and raise funds leading up to the walk.
